I can really understand PHers who do want to recommend various companies for services who do a fabulous service sometimes above and beyond the call of duty which is fair enough but when you feel perhaps you didn't get value for money or did get average, poor, or even shoddy service with a well respected garages it is discouraged by PH to give an honest record of your experience with them.
I had a recent experience with a reputed specialist that was poor to say the least, 'shoddy and negligent' were the expressions the owner agreed with me and paid for remedial/exploratory work to be carried out closer to home at another specialist.
They were highly recommended by the previous owner of my car, were the dearest but I felt my car 'deserved' it, this was perhaps an isolated incident but nobody is allowed to know!
Surely all these companies should take the rough with the smooth somehow or whats the point of only giving positive reviews, Trip Advisor manages it without ant legal issues as it is the customers impression and not their own and relies on the individual to gauge the relevance or fairness of the comments.

I agree with the sentiment BUT the problem will always remain of malicious/spiteful reporting being possible (not that I am suggesting us finer & more upstanding S-Series Owners would ever do something as underhand as that!). Plus the downside to Tripadvisor is that they have (allegedly) been caught having travel agency staff spending hours each day adding imaginary reviews. Possibly better to do any recommendations good or bad on a personal basis ie email or phone? There cant be any harm in posting a "contact me for my experiences" sort of thing on the forum?

It's hard because the internet can do massive damage, which if an organisation is truly bad then I wouldn't have a personal problem with.

However, a trader I know recently had an inaccurate and untrue comment posted on PH which sparked a debate. Most posters clearly knew the truth but of course some could not. The thread had to be withdrawn which was fine but it may be that some people read it and would be put off.

It's hard to know a fair way of doing it. I think most of us might check your location and then PM just in case we were likely to use the same places.

It is a hard one to be fair to all, and also what I find acceptable practice or standards, the next person may notsmile

yes But that is the best thing about independent reviews.

For example:

If i'm planning to go on holiday, i pick a particular location and hotel and use Trip adviser for reviews.

Someone gives their review, and marks it 3/10.
This is not going to make me dismiss my location and hotel choice because of one bad review.

I would read all the reviews as opinions differ, but if you take the average, i.e mainly good to excellent then that is a good honest indication of the standard of, [in this example], the location and hotel.

I'm sure most of us do this now whatever it is we intend to do, or purchase.

This could work just as well for the standard of service etc, provided by various TVR garages, parts suppliers, or whatever.

We all do this now to a point on these forums.

We post when we have received excellent service, or point people in the right direction by recommending companies we may have personally used and been more than satisfied with.

Therefore to give a balance we should also be able to "score" or review companies when they do not.

It comes as no surprise that companies work very hard to get good reviews,it can have a massive effect on business.

When any company is providing a service to a customer, customer satisfaction should be its No.1 priority.

As a potential customer, being able to review a company through other people's personal experiences, is in my opinion vital.

Well said Tom, most eloquently put.

I heartily agree with you, it is all about averaging out the individual subjective experiences and making our own judgements.
I think PH should allow reviews both good & bad, & let the market decide.
Surely a disclaimer header would be sufficient to obviate any litigation?

Anybody with common sense knows that this is the internet, not the Gospel.
