The choice is.
Italy because they have artistic flair and sports cars to drool over.

Germany for tuetonic efficiency and in the case of Porsche and Mercedes some of the fastest cars.

Britain (leave out the Irish Welsh & Scots for a change)for Jaguar, Rolls and a plethora of affordable sports cars like MG & Triumph.

Japan for sheer speed and engineering reliability.

USA for the V8.

i'd go with japan.

they have a big interest in vehicles and engineering prowess, released cheap(ish) for people to enjoy.

britain without a doubt have some motorsport dna with companies like caterham, lotus, mclaren. but they are all too expensive.

The Germans make some good cars but most seem a little mainstream...I reckon the UK do the best ones - Caterham, Noble, Lotus, McLaren...best bit is most of those lot don't appear to be bought as status symbols, maybe that's because they are too hard core for daily use.

Out of that list..

German make the most efficient and clinical petrol head cars
Britain makes the most luxurious petrol head cars
Italy makes the most emotional petrol head cars
America makes the noisiest petrol head cars.
Japan makes the cheapest fun per pound/yen petrol head cars

What I would like is a car with the torque and noise of a Yank Big Block V8 in an Italian body with German suspension and drive train and a British interior and all for the price of a Jap ricer. Perfect car.

DeTomaso Pantera was the nearest to that... (bar the price)

Britain, under your own terms:
Italy - one trick, supercars. (Alfa aren't quite back yet but i hope they are)
Germany - one trick, efficient sports GT cars
US - worst car country. Even GT-40 was British ;-)
Japan - good call, much underestimated
Britain - lightweight sports: Lotus, Morgan, Caterham, Noble, Ariel, BAC, TVR
- Supercar: McClaren
- GT: AM, Jag
- offroad: Land Rover
- luxury: Bentley, RR
- odd: Bristol

Contradictory, as you are only left with England, so by definition it can't be Britain. Also, Irish/Welsh/Scots have of course contributed in the past and present to every aspect of the BRITISH motoring industry, through individual expertise etc, so to dismiss those nations is a bit disrespectful.

Anyway, it's close but I would say overall the British make the best petrol head cars. We have built and manufactured some of the most iconic cars in history, and produced fine performance cars at every level of the automotive world.

We have everything - performance, luxury, passion, engineering innovation, motorsport pedigree, aggression, and individuality etc. etc. Every nation listed has these traits, but we have them spread more evenly and widely across our automotive history more than any other. We are the worlds premiere petrol heads, it's in our DNA.

Wasn't most of that satisfied by a RV8 TVR?

For me...

Germany - Too efficient, too clinical, too good.
Italy - It's all about two wheels here.
Japan - Certainly have their own petrol heads, but the cars don't have the passion or soul of other nations, and are mostly seen as white goods here.
America - Home of the petrol head and undoubtedly a massive car culture, though admittedly quite different in nature to our own.
France - Was there at the start, and make the best hot hatches, but when was the last time they made something truly desirable?

Britain - Top for me, no other nation has so many small producers of characterful, quick and interesting "petrol head" cars as Britain. Sure we don't build them as nicely as the Germans, or make as many as the Japanese, or build embarrassing mid-life crisis cars like the Italians, or even worship the internal combustion engine as much as the Americans, but who else builds cars like Caterham? Morgan? the LCC Rocket? Ultima? Lotus? TVR? Noble? Ariel? Not to mention the 'posher' brands such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, McLaren, Rolls Royce and Bentley.

But maybe I'm a bit biased. Have a look at my garage and it is mostly British, and my fantasy garage is 100% home-grown.

I guess it depends what you look for in a car. For my priorities of driving pleasure, it'll be Britain, because Lotus are British and imho nothing drives as well as a Lotus driving

UK.

We make more bespoke niche sports cars than anyone else.

The US or Japan would be next and Germany is more for executives rather than 'petrol heads'

Got to agree with what's been said; Britain, no other country has seemed to nail driving feel like Lotus have. (never driven a caterham or a noble)

I've only tried one Noble, an M400. I did about five laps of Bedford Autodrome in it. The turbo lag ruined it for me sadly (the power kept coming in mid corner when I didn't want it), as did the awful steering wheel which had shiny plastic right where you put your hands so I couldn't hold the wheel delicately to feel what was gong on. I was unimpressed by the car, but to be honest I'd need to try one for longer to really form an opinion.

I should have mentioned Caterham actually - I love those and have owned two :-)
