hello all,

i have just bought a jago, and trying to find a little information out...

my car was built in 1988 on a mk1 escort but haas been modified since then it is now fitted with what i think is a pinto (1.6) engine, i'm told it is a cortina bottom end fitted with sierra head??

i am luckey enough for my car to be tax exemped so thats a cost saved!

Has any one got one of the sierra based kits (i read about it some where). Is it the same body?

i fancy this conversion as my engine is not very good so i thought about putting a ford v6 and 5 speed box in but to compliment this sierra suspension would be good.

any advice greatfully recived

Hi

Visit the technical site www.joctechnical.org.uk
where you will find info regards the conversion of the Escort chassis to the Sierra based one.
Unfortunately only one actual Sierra based Jago kit was sold and the people who had that one were supposed to put in an order for about 12 I think but cancelled the remaining order.
Hence why the kit as such has been shelved and the chassis conversion is the current thing being offered.
I am presuming that your Jago is registered on the donors number plate to make it tax exempt.
I hope the actual V5 is correct (info on the correct layout of the V5 also on the technical site) otherwise you could come unstuck if the MOT man ever sticks by the rules and requests to see the V5 before doing the test.
The V6 fits the Escort layout but would be more easily accomodated in the Sierra chassis (slightly wider).
the body dimensions are pretty much the same but the track is wider hence why it has extended front and rear arches.

Last I heard was the Sierra chassis for the Jago has got the struts placed foward to aid the stability so would not accept the 4x4 Sierra stuff.
Regards the V5 really you should fill in the change of details section and return it to the DVLA possibly with a letter saying you have had it back from them and noticed the following are incorrect. They may think they put the errors in and just issue a new correct one.
However I have heard from some owners who have had the problem that the DVLA have said that as it is incorrectly registered it would need a SVA test to get it correctly documented. In this case they usually seize the V5 to prevent you trying to sell the vehicle on incorrectly registered. Most if not all JAgo's would be hard pushed to get through an SVA test.
The choice is yours. Some people would say take a chance and just hope you never need to produce the V5.
I can not really advice you either way on this as it is each persons choice what they do.

Fortunately the Geep I purchased last weekend is correctly registered as a Jago whilst retaining the donor vehicle registration and is on the latest 2 page style V5.

Because of his concerns regarding future problems with Mot's etc. the previous owner recently bit the bullet and contacted his local DVLA office who inspected the vehicle and related correspondence and agreed to change it from escort based kit car to Jago.

This may simply be one of those regional things where different offices interpret the rules their own way but he certainly gave me the impression that there was no reluctance to re-classify the vehicle.

I agree it may be best at this point to go the way of the ostrich until a problem arises possibly at the next Mot , but there again not all Testing stations would ask to see the V5 especially if they are used to testing specialist vehicles.

Ironically enough a friend of mine has been making enquiries about a kit car currently listed on Ebay and has been told the V5 should be back from DVLA any day now ! I told him to steer clear as I did with 2 of the Geeps I desperately wanted to bid on but had no V5 to view!

Hi Keith

As far as I know he had it inspected by Sheffield VLO , might be worth making a quick phone call first without mentioning which type of kit it is just to see what their initial reaction is.....

My only concern would be the tax exemption aspect they might decide as it is pinto engined that not enough of the original Mark 1 donor car exists to retain its ID then its "brownie points" for them if they can get it back on PLG with a Q plate or worse !

Good Luck

Mark

well i do have one positive up-date, i spoke to the previouse owner and apparently it was fitted with a private plate before i bought it. to have this removed it had to be inspected and no problems arose there.

to be honest i may be jsst better leaving it as be and see what happens!
