Can anyone clarify exactly what one gets for the delivery charge on a new car. I was shocked to see that my local BMW dealer wants to relieve me of £750 just to deliver a new car to me, number plates and a wash and vacuum, maybe a bunch of flowers for Mrs Blue, what else?

It covers getting the car from Germany to the UK, then from the docks to the dealer, all by transporter rather than being driven. On The Road costs usually include the PDI, valet, some fuel etc.

Sounds like Ryanair pricing wink

BMW (and Merc/VW) have to get the cars from Germany to the UK anyway, so why not include the costs in the price?

They do, it's called a delivery charge which is part of the OTR costs. biggrin

They do, the simply itemise it out on the invoice.

It should really be called something else though as when I sold cars, customers used to ask if they could avoid the charge by collecting the car themselves, computer says no.

Sounds a bit like the admin fee Stratstone tried to charge me when i went to buy my DB9. Held my ground and they took it off the invoice. Stand your ground and they'll drop it

It is nothing like the Stratstone admin fee, that is a made up dealer charge, this is something the manufacturer charges the dealer. They won't drop it.

I'm sure for us at Mini, we were charged about £460 by Mini to ship a car to us, worst was when I was at a dealership about 30 miles from the factory, the fee is the same whether the car has to travel 800 miles or 10.

Funnily enough the dealer is Stratstone, but the way it is itemised on the quote it looks like a dealer charge as it's in with the obligatory life shine etc. I never knew the charge was literally for delivery from the factory, always thought it was for the mythical PDI and number plates, I'm sure I've been charged for fuel separately.
