I am about to list my knackered X-Type Jaguar on the bay however having read some of the horror stories regarding selling via the bay i am a little wary as this will be the first time i have sold a car in this way.

Apart from telling the truth in the ad - the car is knackered which will be made very clear - what should i be wary of?

Also payment - i'm guessing that cash on collection or direct transfer into my bank is the best way with payment by Pay-Pal to be avoided at all costs?

Stupid questions i know however selling on the bay worries me somewhat.

People will just bid with no intention to buy, probably without ever contacting you. Offering the car to second and third highest bidders serves only to confirm that none of them actually want the car. eBay will charge you £38 regardless and will do nothing to assist.

If it were me, I would just stick it under the Shed section in the classifieds on here. Someone will want it.

Most ebay sales go just fine.
It can be worth refusing low feedback bidders.

Once the auction is over treat it as any normal sale in terms of payment. Don't take paypall.

I suppose the question is just how knackered is knackered?

Would cash in your hand from a scrap yard not be a whole lot easier than messing around on Ebay?

I don't sell anything on Ebay anymore after I was banned as a result of too many people being unable to read listings and understand basic terms.

Knackered as in 'broken engine'. Bottom end appears to have divorced itself from the top end however due to having no cash at the moment i havent had the engine pulled apart to see what the damage is.

Was told that it wasnt worth spending any money doing that so the car has been sitting in garage yard for the last 3 months.

Loved the car & im gutted she has to go.

Local scrap yard offered me £75 & then said that i would have to deliver the car to them. Which is difficult as the car doesnt move & i dont happen to have a low-loader sitting on my drive....

Tossers.

Didnt think to put it on the Shed section as being knackered i assumed it wouldnt be of interest so i might just do that.

Stick it up on eBay and see what happens. Chances are someone will give you a couple of hundred quid, come along and take it away.

There is a website somewhere that is the equivalent of webuyanycar.com except is for scrap cars. I cant remember what it is called but someone else may know.

I see, have you tried any of those "car take back " scrappage scheme companies? might be worth getting a few quotes as some will come and collect the car.

I used "CarTakeBack" to scrap my old Volvo recently (After taking some bits out for Ebay)

They just came and took it away when they said they would, really good service.

I got £150 for a knackered old Volvo V40, so surely you'll get a bit more for your Jag?

My car take back may be worth a punt. They gave me £150 for a knackered ford ka with no mot. They collected and gave me double what any of the local scrappies offered.

Exactly, and yet people still insist that scrap is £200 minimum and far far too many utter sheds advertised at £500

Tried them - joke of an offer: 'We will be pleased to take the car from you & offer you £0.00!!!!!' fk that!

Thing is, & i know i am going to get slated for this, i had never thought of the car as scrap until recently as it was in extremely good condition for the age of the car (not too mention the low mileage as well).

PH listing to be done tonight & its also going on Gumtree &, a little warily, on ebay.

Ouch!

Have you joined the X type owners club? Might be able to sell it whole at a better price to someone who appreciates a low mileage donor car or has a good engine in a rubbish shell?

Holy first post! Yeah yeah I know, I've been a member since when and this is my first post (occasional lurker, and only just bothered to sort out my login details).

Anywho, the scrappage thing could still be an option, I've been looking at it recently and found Motorwise gave me a half decent price on my old knackered Primera.

Website http://www.motorwise.com/index.cfm/quote

I guess it depends on where abouts you are in the country, but as a rough idea I lobbed in a reg number from an old x-type add on AT along with my postcode and it came back with a quote of £187, which don't seem too bad. Not sure what it'll be with your postcode, but could be worth a shot.

And before anyone starts to wonder, I've got no links to the company in any way, just thought I'd pass on a bit of possibly useful info.
