Hi all, I have a pain in my left knee, I know I should probably just go and see my GP, but haven't got round to it yet. The pain is at the front of my left knee, just below and slightly outside the knee cap. I do circuits, metafit and boxfit and I get no pain at all when jogging, sprinting, squatting or jumping, it is however extremely painful if I try to kneel on it, it can't bear any weight at all when kneeling. It started when I climbed in to the loft on 27th December, when I knelt down on the boarding it felt like I'd knelt on a tack or pesky Lego brick but there was nothing there, and no signs of any splinters. It has never shown any bruising or swelling besides a slight raised lump running sideways across my knee cap. I had bursitis on my elbow last year and wondered if this was a similar thing but that cleared up within about 10 days and had significant swelling. Anybody experienced anything similar to this? Any ideas/help appreciated. Thanks
I'm not the most flexible of people generally (struggle to touch my toes with straight legs) but I haven't noticed anything different to the norm recently. Had a slight pain in the ligament at the outside of the knee (not sure which one this is) a couple of weeks back but this disappeared again after a day or two.

Thanks for the replies guys, a very brief google and wiki search does make Chondromalacia a potential culprit here. I guess i'll just have to bite the bullet and get to my GP, I fully expect him/her to just say rest and use anti-inflammatory creams though. Which is just what I don't want to hear as i'm really enjoying my exercise at the moment, but if thats what it takes then I don't suppose I have much choice. Thanks again.
I went to my docs with something similar about 6 years ago and they gave me diclofenac. It persisted until I stopped running.
A couple of years later I tried running again and the problem reared its head again. I went to see an osteopath and she fixed this immediately. She showed me my IT band was very tight and showed me some stretches to relieve the tension. I did these for a couple of weeks with no running. Next time I ran no problem. Never had it again since ever but always keep an eye on the tightness in my IT band.
Apparently a tight IT band can pull the knee to one side. As you move your leg the knee slides up and won in a groove. If the knee is pulled to one side it rubs rather than slide and this causes discomfort, inflammation and pain.

You've got me thinking now, back in April-May 2012 I had a problem with my left adductor muscle which worsened when running. Went to see a physio who said that basically my core stability wasn't great and my legs weren't stable when running. I worked on my balance and core strength, while laying off running and the issue went away, maybe this problem is linked to my previous one. Maybe i'll give the physio a visit rather than my GP, at least I'll get a few sessions paid for through health care scheme at work. Thanks.
ATM you were spot on! Went to see the osteopath this morning, he said I have some mal-tracking issues due to hip/pelvis misalignment but mainly a very tight IT band, hamstring and lateral quad. Going back for another session on Thursday, he has given me some stretches and massage ideas to do at home in the meantime. Thanks for the advice!
