Hello fellow PH'ers, ive been a reader for years but just joined ph recently.
My other half needs new car as her corsa (c) is about to throw in the towel any day now.

Shes willing to spend around £6k and her main requirements that the car itself be an automatic as she hates manuals and thinks she'll take out a rogue sheep if she drives one. And that the car itself may need to be financed partly due us saving for a wedding and house deposit.

I was looking at primarily dsg boxes as ive owned an old auto corsa semi-auto which was a nightmare to repair on and nearly impossible to find another one in existance to salvage parts from.

I was looking at vw golf mk5 140's and 170s and a3/leons but any other suggestions and advice would be greatly appricated, thanks biggrin

Suzuki Swift 1.5

It'll be a massive improvement over a Corsa comes with keyless / aircon / steering wheel radio controls all for under £4k for a sub 50K mile one from a dealer.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you're saving etc does it really make sense to spunk £6k? The long-term reliability of early DSG cars isn't certain yet, you could end up with a very big bill to keep it going.

Would something like this not be a bit more appropriate?

I'd say auto borkage is what you're trying to avoid at this price. Stay away from anything Audi or VW (multitronic and DSG are too complicated in my opinion, and a problem could render the car worthless). Similarly any automatic manual (aka a clutchless manual) will be a nightmare, primarily as people don't know how to drive them and wear the clutch out. Careful with these as they are temptingly cheap.

My advice would be to go for a conventional torque converter auto or a respected CVT. The VW four and five speed TC is good. It's hard to find newer cars with conventional TCs but I understand Kia still use them.

FWIW, I was in the same position as you 12 months ago but with a grand less to spend. We opted for a 2007 Jazz which is a CVT and is fantasic, the model has faults but they are well known and easily rectified.

If you look at the Jazz too, be careful as after 2009 (IIRC) they went to an i-shift which is an automated manual and rubbish. They reverted to a CVT in 2012 I understand.

Should do the job perfectly (although not that exciting)....newer than most other options though at a '59' plate (may get a lower spec- 2010?)

I give you....the nissan note!

Yeah i completely appreciate what your saying it just that she needs a very reliable car as shes a careworker and uses her car for house visits daily so her annual work mileage is around 8k.

Im not sharpest tool in the box when it comes to autos and (would prefer she gets a manual) so instantly jumped to something ive heard alot of praise regarding (dsg)

Something from Honda. The auto box in my accord is utterly excellent. Responsive, smooth, power on demand. Best one I've driven easily.

A Nissan Note or even a Cube (if she can live with the looks http://www.cargiant.co.uk/Nissan/Cube/details-6276... If she wants something a bit bigger then the Chevrolet Cruze will come with plenty of warranty left and prices are very low, £7k gets a very recent high spec one http://www.cargiant.co.uk/Chevrolet/Cruze/details-... but you'd get one a year or so older for £6k. You do realise that you can get a JDM MX5 auto...

Got my wife a Mini Cooper S for around that price, and she absolutely adores it - she even washes it every weekend, she loves it so much!

DSG boxes do need regular servicing, at least the earlier implementations of them (something like 30,000 mile oil changes).

The golf mk. IV (2002 and before i think) auto boxes have some known issues (01M transmission) which can be difficult to get an instant fix for.

It isnt uncommon for honda auto boxes to have a dipstick - this is a good sign as it allows you to monitor the auto box fluid. Honda also specify maintenance for them, whilst many other manufacturers may not.

In general, for turn-key reliability and ease of servicing etc, a jap car isnt a bad idea. As with everything, inspect carefully. Also, with an auto, get it out and have a good test drive - 330 mins - to get the autobox up to temp. Some issues only manifest themselves when the 'box is warm.

I didn't think they made an automatic Cooper S?

I would echo recommendations for the Jazz.

And you don't need to spend anything like your £6k original budget.
Most have had an easy life and looked after very well.

Another Jazz vote here. We had an early CVT (from when you had to wait for 6 months for delivery) and then replaced it with an early i-Shift which we have just changed for a Merc B class (CVT). I do miss the Jazz - even as an i-Shift. I drove it full time on the flappy paddles though whereas MrsMercs left it in auto.

I have also driven my mothers Notes (on her third now) - only manual's though. Certainly worth a look - slightly more comfortable, if less flexible.

They did actually http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

That said I would recommend something like a Micra(think its pretty much the same as the note), we have a 56 plate one on our fleet and it has been great only thing that really went wrong on it was a faulty exhaust sensor. Fair enough its not the most exciting car but for what it is it is very good, at the moment I prefer it to the 09 Polo Automatic we have just got.

This looks like a nice VW Golf DSG and sounds like it has pretty good history with it.

I bought a 3 year old Jazz at the weekend, it's manual and over budget for you OP, but it is an utterly brilliant little car and I'm chuffed to bits with it.
