Long-term plan
Discussion
When I am all grown up and have kids (fairly soon), I think I will find it hard to justify a 2-seater as my car (of 2 cars in the family).
Given that I am now a proper Porsche fan boy, I am very tempted to get a 911. I dont like the 991 because it is as big as a 2 bedroom flat, and I am not very fond of the 997 or the 996 either. The 993 is a different story. Very good-looking and more like it in terms of size.
Would I find a 993 slow? I think my 987.2 S is about fast enough for me. I do not buy all this nonesense about not being able to use the power. I do not want a turbo, though, as I would miss the NA engine sound.
Is a 993 fairly comfortable even relative to cars from recent years or would it be noticeably more "raw"?
(I obviously would not touch a tiptronic.)

they look very dated inside to me.
I would rather a 964 with a few tweeks than a 993 these days esp now the 993 RS has gone into sky rocket prices.
993 now being dragged up in price and don't seem great value, the 964 has also gone up loads in the last year, but 1/2 the price of a nice 993 still.
or do what I did and buy a Cayman R, very 993 like in size and a bit more raw, but with all the mods cons and faster.
only you know if you can live with the older interiors day to day and the extra upkeep a older car needs.
ALso many 964's have been refreshed and 993's have not so you need to watch what you buy as it could get expensive refreshing a 993.

I'd say the driving experience would be hightened compared with your existing Porker, and only in a positive way. Ultimately going and driving some 993's is the only real advice to see the comparison.
In terms of comfort, the 993 has it all imb. I put 70k miles on my last 993 with usual mix of European and daily driving around the UK. Epic machines and still missed in many ways.

993s are fairly civilised to drive. Not a raw driving experience by any means, but the controls will fee heavy relative to the newer cars. The interior is prehistoric, but not necessarily a bad thing if you appreciate Porsche classics. It's probably a good compromise as far as classic 911s go and you will have the bonus of depreciation proof motoring. But you have to buy wisely, these are old cars with plenty of potential to become a money pit. A bad example could put you off for life.
P.S. If you do try a 993 and find the drive a bit too raw for your taste, then you really should think again about the 997. They are great cars to drive, much like your current 987.

1st, you need to drive a well looked after one to see if you enjoy them. In 1998 I swapped what was back then 'my new kid on the block 986 Boxster' for an OPC approved 993. I loved my 993 from day one, and, approaching 16-years on, I've still got it, and still love every drive in her.

Next, if you do enjoy the 993 experience (not everybody does), your next task will be to find a good one for sale at a reasonable price.
Why? During the 5-years of production from December 1993 to mid 1998, only 4,479 UK 993s were registered, therefore total supply was limited compared to the water cooled 996 and 997 models. Add that to the fact that many of us long term owners have no plans to sell, which further limits the supply of good remaining UK cars - which is why 993 prices for good cars are as they are!
HTH
So if you do drive one, and like them, and then decide to move forward with your plans, let us know how you go on.

The classic interior is part of the charm of aircooled 911's.
It's simple because your focused on driving. Some people will never get it!
dated in a not good way, hence me saying I would go 964.It's simple because your focused on driving. Some people will never get it!

993 Interior

964 Interior (with a non-standard wheel)

3.2 Carrera Interior

Have you considered a 964 or 3.2 Carrera?
Probably a car for some weekday commutes and lots of weekend use. The interior doesn't bother me and I would prefer heavier streering, tbh, so I expect I will fall in love with one and end up paying top dollar.
I'll start trying some out now so I can plan ahead a bit and wait for a good one to hit the market. It will be a while before I buy, though, as I'm not going to give up my 2-seater until I have to.
MrD is just bullying me because he knows I want his Cayman R.

What do you prefer of the 964 interior that you don't like in the 993?
the price :-) get some nice hard back sports seats on a nice clean 964, don't see the point paying todays very high 993 prices.I just like the 964 shape better that's all.
as for the 4 seats you quoted lol with all the GT3 talk I always forget these are 4 seats :-)

There isn't that much in price between a 964 and 993. Maybe 5k? A decent 964 coupe is circa 20k, a 993, 25k.I just like the 964 shape better that's all.
