It could be worse if they didn't come on, but they don't always switch off!

On intermittent they sometimes sweep after an interval, or do 2 sweeps then stop, or just keep on going. On switching them off at the stalk sometimes they obey and other times they just keep on wiping until they are good and ready. Wiping with a little flick of the stalk more often than not works but sometimes they fancy rolling on for a good few sweeps.

Switch the ignition off and they stop of course, and stay stopped when you switch it on until you use the stalk and off we go again. When they do stop they stop in the right place so I'm not suspecting the park switch.

I'm leaning towards a dodgy connection at the stalk (it's the original Vauxhall type) but thought I'd throw it out to my learned brethren.

Park switch

Don't be fooled into thinking it wont be, small connection issues can cause major problems. We were lectured by a Lotus engineer in uni, and he said the same when building the Elan.. They just couldn't get the electrics right. Lights, wipers, then radio would turn on at the slightest bad earth, or bad connection. In fact he then admitted they never got it right, and launched the car anyway... lol

Get involved!

Just think how much a garage would charge to do the same job, could push your unexpected bills up to £40 :-)

I've found this article to be a great help:

There will be differences in wire cable colours but the principle is the same.

Wow - someone has gone to great lengths on that. Mechanically I am OK, electrics though are the work of the devil.

Finally got round to fitting the new park switch. Suppose I'll have to wait to see if it cured it though as wipers were working properly when I tested them before swapping the switch out.

Intermittent faults - don't you love them. smile
