I recently bought a car over the phone £200 deposit left car described in good condition with 64000 miles. Pictures in autotrader looked good. Travelled 500 miles to find car had dents along the sill on the passenger side and the mileage was 76000 miles!!!
After a discussion it was agreed that a two year warranty and £300 would be knocked off the price. I purchased the car and found out later on my drive home that the wheels needed aligned ( felt above 55mph ) and that going from fifth to fourth the car wouldn't change gear. It will go from third to fourth but not from fifth to fourth.
I took the car into a local garage to get it checked over and they tell me that the front bushes shouldn't have passed mot test. The mot on the car is 1 week old. They also advise that the gearbox may need to be stripped! What rights do I have to get the car repaired to how it should have been sold. The dealer was small independent, car is Fabia vrs. Any help would be gratefully recieved.

Talk to the dealer, be reasonable! How did you travel 500 miles to buy a Fabia? Madness.

I think I'd have walked at the mileage 'discrepancy'.

There have been loads of threads on used car issues recently - the same advice is generally dished out, most of which refers to inspection before purchase.

In your shoes I'd be talking to the dealer first. Legally - you may have rights but what's it going to cost you to enforce them?

500 miles for a Fabia VRS? Did you test drive it before buying it?

Sometimes you just have to say no, get back in the car and drive back.

How can you tell the wheels need aligning by going above 55mph?

Bit harsh that mate

A lot or most buyers are not clued up and can find themselves being suckered in by sales patter. Even experienced buyers can miss things that come to light a day or two later.

OP - document all the faults and write to the dealer - send it recorded delivery and ask for a plan of action from them. Do it right from the start and keep a log of all correspondence.

They may well bend over backwards to help you out; you never know

Because you negotiated the price down, the seller would claim that was negotiated because of the problems.
You're wasting your time trying to pursue it.

I did a good inspection of the car and test drove it. I thought the discount and additional warranty circa £600 was a fair deal regarding the damage and the extra mileage. The problem with the gear change did not appear during test drive and is intermittent but getting worse. The wheel imbalance only shows above 55- 60. Don't particularly like being called an idiot asking for some advice. If you are not trying to help why post? I hope that in times of help you receive a little more sympathy than you dish out. I live in the north west of Scotland and to find a car usually means travelling a hefty distance. Thank you to those who have genuinely tried to help.

You think so?

You don't think there might be just an element of common sense screaming that travelling to the dark side of the moon for a cheap shed of a generic shopping trolley - then buying it anyway even when a quick once round tells you it's a wrong 'un - isn't the smartest of moves?

Call the Dealer straight away, give him the opportunity to fix it. The warranty probably won't cover existing faults, but you won't know what to do next until you've spoken to the Dealer.

Come back when you know what they're going to do.
