Got my renewal notice, with the auto renewal advice so that they can take it from my card, £349.99.

Last year, same cover was £150, so I called them.

Their excuse for the double in price eas well, you've used us twice this year. So thats 2 call outs, one for a flat battery (daughter#2's car) and I put the keys in the boot of mine, together with my golf clubs.

Hardly an excuse for doubling the premium, thinks I.

I have a dispute with them anyway about the time they suggested would be ok to take a peek at my other daughter's car, broken down in deepest darkest Northamptonshire, well, just off the M1 in the middle of the day was 3 hours. For a single female on her own. In the end I cancelled it and sorted it out with a local garage in a fraction of the time.

So, 4 cars, had to use the service I paid for twice in 12 months i.e. 0.5 call outs per car per year and they double the premium ?

Chancers.

Just threaten to leave.

I do it every year and my renewal price nearly always comes down to 'new customer' levels. If they um and err then I go to the competition. AA then RAC then back to AA.

Works for me!

I'm not particularly surprised. Breakdown cover is a form of insurance - how much do you think any other insurance provider would have increased a premium by if you made two claims in a year?

Shop around and if you can't find anything that looks worth the money, don't bother at all and just pay for the recovery directly if you have an issue.

Halifax Ultimate Reward bank account.

£10 a month, gives me AA cover with Homestart, along with a whole bunch of other stuff (cellphone insurance, travel insurance, card cover, home emergency cover, etc).

Bargain.

Always get my breakdown cover through my insurance provider.

Usually about 60 quid for the full thing, home start, roadside, recovery yada yada, international etc.

Used a couple of times - no problems at all - infact really good service.

I don't bother with it.

The only time I ever did was the year before last. My car destroyed a balljoint so signed up on the spot to get it towed to a garage. Cost me about £180 there and then.

Kept it for the year. Used it a couple of times actually. Once when the timing belt on my car jumped and I needed a tow (although I could have just asked my missus to come and do the same). Second time the same car blew it's head gasket and left me stranded about 30 miles from home. Called up, told them exactly where I was (even with a post code) and waited. 4 hours later after numerous calls from them telling me they can't find me and taking the address over and over, they still hadn't turned up so I got my missus to tow me anyway.

Safe to say I never renewed and I wont ever take out a policy again unless I have to.
