I've had a search via Google and seem to find lots of 'I think' etc.

I'm in the process of buying a car from my step dads friend, its cheap (£300) as it needs a bit of work doing, and is a cat C write off.

I've phoned VOSA and they have confirmed that it will need a VIC, no problem with this, can get one sorted down the road from me.

As its a cat C, I believe that I need to get it re-MOTed before I can use it on the road. Is this correct? Its not too much of an issue as its due in April anyway.

Thanks smile.

I bought a Cat C car before Xmas ... repaired it, insured it & as it was still taxed I booked it in for an MOT at beginning of January, drove it there, booked it in for VIC check (last week of Jan), drove it there & got my "Vehicle Identity Check Pass Certificate" smile

No idea what happens next .. tax ran out 31st of Jan & I have no V5 to be able to re-tax it frown

I really should ring VOSA and ask them lol

Yes, you will need to have a VIC done and then the MOT.

The MOT is valid for 12 months, needing a VIC doesn't change that.

From experience of rebuilding a cat C in mid 2007 - You'll need a VIC before you can tax it, but the MoT is still valid. You may, however, find that your insurers insist on a new MoT being obtained before they're prepared to cover you.

You will need to have the car TAXED, MOT'd and INSURED plus have front and rear number plates in order to take the car for a VIC test.

More info here (you must have a inferior version of Google to me as I search "VIC test" the direct Gov site is top of the list)

I gave my insurance a ring and they've said as long as it has a MOT, either before or after, they'll insure me.

My next question is, can I drive the car while I'm waiting for the VIC to be done? Or do I have to wait until it's been given the all clear?
