URGENT - Price to charge for a picture....
Discussion
Don't normally ask questions marked urgent...but....your advice is as always much appreciated.
Some of you may recall that I photographed the world's tallest single masted yacht on the rocks while on holiday in the south of France. Well, I've already been published in Yachting World
and got my cheque through, but have just this minute had a voicemail from a superyacht insurance company wanting to use one of my photos in a presentation they are doing in Dubai in a couple of weeks.
How much is a fair price? I want to get some idea of what's reasonable before I speak to him, assuming its a sort of powerpoint show.
Any thoughts, and tips?
Thanks, as always,
LB

As a guide, if you go to www.alamy.com you can get a price that they'd charge for a particular usage.
If you're interested, the pictures are here:

And the most 'interesting picture' being:
Thanks for the link Ed....
Just had a look here too:
www.tssphoto.com/stock_price.html
which suggested about $100

I would have thought that you would have retained the copyright of the image, despite 'Yachting World' publishing it. As a freelancer I have maintained the copyright for all the work that I have been commissioned by magazines to shoot.
It is always best to price high, then negotiate downwards. People will always try to buy your work on the cheap so that they make a better profit on a job. Giving up your copyright should dictate that the buyer pays a far higher fee as you will no longer be able to sell the image to another company/individual and make further money from sales.
Costing should be based on the duration of use, the number of people who the image will be seen buy/circulated to, the nature of use, ie. small company quarterly brochure, full page ad in 'The Times' or billboard on the North Circular!
Insurance companies do have lots of money, but will doubtless have a budget to work to. I sold a picture to a motoring insurance company about ten years ago for about £125. It was for one off use in a short run magazine campaign. I still maintain the copyright of the image.
Hope some of this helps.

Thanks for all your help and wisdom folks.
I quoted him £100 for the pic to be used in a powerpoint show. He didn't call back....so be it.
As for the pics in Yachting World, they paid £35 per picture, so that was £105 for the 3 pictures in 2 issues. Very pleased. Copyright remains with me for all the pictures, and they asked if they could use the picture again in the December issue beforehand. Great people there, advising the picture editor on her next digicam now, after she saw all my pics, and the ones of Freddie (the cat).

Ho hum. Whilst 'luxury yacht insurance' sounds like a loaded business - and it no doubt it is - think of the stressed, sweating and slightly overweight middle manager with no budget trying to strap together a PowerPoint presentation for some tedious conference.
Company coffers are one thing, transferring any of the contents to your own is another. I speak from experience!

It's currently in dry dock in Portsmouth being repaired. You just do not get the scale of it unless you stand next to it. The mast, the biggest single sea going carbon fibre mast in the world, stands 90M above its deck
