Until earlier this evening, I had a Ford Mondeo. It has been 100% reliable, never so much as a cough or a flutter, and the only thing that it's needed in my onwership was the EGR valve cleaning. Driven all over the country and it hasn't missed a beat, it passed its MOT a fortnight ago with no advisories. The cheapest motoring I'm ever likely to have!

It had been up for sale for a few days, with no interest bar the usual chancers and offshore workers, but a guy called today coming from two hours away - sounded genuine so we agree a meeting time and a price. With an hour to go I decide to take it to the car wash. Lumpy idle, every time I pulled up and dipped the clutch the revs dropped to 500 and then blipped up, basically idling like a bag of st banghead I start panicking, it's driving okay but the idle isn't getting any better. Ihone the guy to tell him what's happening, he's not far away and, sounding understandably dubious, says that they'll still come. Whilst I'm on the phone the fking thing reverts, just like that, back to perfection. Couldn't even provoke it for the life of me banghead He did buy it but the damage was done and I ended up knocking more money off. I broke even on it so it's not the end of the world, but still annoying.

Anyway, make me feel better! When have you been left looking like a complete chancer as you sell your otherwise trustworthy steeds?! laugh

Maybe they do!

Put a Z3 up for sale a few years ago, shortly after someone drove into the side of it and drove off.

Typically a warning light will come on or a tyre will get a puncture.

I had an Alfa 156, had a cambelt and pump change on it at 100k's. Moved to Australia 3 mths later selling it to my best mate. He had it 4 weeks and the belt broke lunching the engine. Said he spent £1500 sorting it. 'Why didn't you take it back to the garage who did the change for me as its under warranty?'. He didn't think about it and I felt gutted.

He turned to God shortly after - maybe he needed him before that.

I can relate - put my Saxo track car up for sale late last year & the bloody thing lunched it's engine the next day banghead On the plus side it's now acting as the perfect security aid to prevent anyone getting access to my garage to steal anything laugh

Not the fault of the car, but of some inconsiderate ahole...

Put this pristine Puma up for sale - low mileage and no rust (the Puma's known for rusty arches!). As it was a second car, I'd parked it round the corner in a quiet side road. The day before I had someone coming to view it I went to take it out for a run and a clean to make sure it was all fine - as I approached the car, I saw someone had driven into the driver's door! No note of course, I was fking livid.

Whilst the door panel had given, there was no damage to the paint. I repaired it as best I could, pushing the door back out from inside and gave the door a mild cut and polish. It came out OK but there was still evidence of a little rippling so I did what I felt was right - took some pictures and emailed them to the seller informing them of what had happened with the option to bail. They still came and saw the car and were happy with it, pulled me down a couple of hundred on the asking price.

It made me so angry that someone had done what they did and just driven off - it wasn't as though they couldn't have noticed...

2 punctures the day when someone was coming to pick up my car. Drove over a smashed manhole cover on the road, got a puncture, spent hours driving around with the wheel in a borrowed car, trying to get one in the size (no spare or tyre weld, or breakdown cover) 4 garages and 4 hours later I finally found one that had the size in stock, with less than an hour until the buyer comes to pick it up... Come back to my car that I had left down someone's road up on the scissor jack for 4 hours - Actually surprised it's still on it!

Put the wheel back on and whilst lowering the car.. discover the other back tyre also has a puncture now.. Great. 9+ years of driving with no punctures - two in one day!

About 12 years ago, I was selling our Toyota Townace, a jap import people carrier (don't laugh I had 3 kids under 4 years old), a guy from Hemel Hempstead had agreed to come up to manchester with his missus, stay at his mates in Bolton, and view the car first thing the next morning, I'd promised him the car was exactly as described. Washed it the previous eve, and blow me the damn thing refused to start at the local jet wash, managed to push start it home but clearly it wasn't just a flat battery. The buyer was at my house the next day helping me push start it to drive it to the mechanics who, by 2pm had fixed a dodgy alternator, the buyer reluctantly waited all day, bless him, knocked me down a bit but had promised his 5!!! Kids, he'd return with a new car, his missus had already left hours before, I'd given him his lunch, and let him stay at my house all day. A very trusting chap.

The day before my Volvo S40 was being collected it wouldn't idle at all, just cut out unless you held the revs up. Found the throttle body gasket had failed, never had an issue before, it was collected the week after though.

Had a Nissan Primera which sounds somewhat like the OP's Mondy, used and abused ot for 100k, even treated it to a proper Nissan service who said it needed nothing doing to it mechanically, just filters. Anyway, chucked it on eBay and it sold for a decent enough amount, the winner coming to collect it the same day I took delivery of my brand new car. Car was delivered, bloke turns up an hour later, Primera doesn't start, needed 3-4 attempts to get it going, it had never done that before!
