It's been awhile since I bought a new game and I love the FPS survival/zombie genre so I was looking for something of that ilk, but not to the extent of DayZ - I tried a few times but the learning curve was too steep, it wasn't much fun unless playing with others and graphically it was a bit pants. Games of the L4D series I loved but I always fancied something with a bit more of a survival aspect to it (without losing the experience of blowing zombies heads off.)

I've just been flicking through the Steam store and 7 Days To Die looks reasonable, if graphically not brilliant. Anyone tried it, or anything else that's worth looking at?

I asked this very question about three months ago. I've been watching DayZ SA develop and it still looks a bit clunky, I don't fancy forking out for it just yet. Maybe take a look at Rust? It does have zombies as far as I am aware, but the sandbox building side of things intrigues me the most.

That does look quite good, although Zombies were apparently taken out a couple of days ago. I had a month or two spell of being totally addicted to SurvivalCraft, so that could be up my street. Particularly if they bring Zombies back.

I've been enjoying Nether - It's aliens rather than Zombies but same sort of game. Nice and tense. Still in Beta mind you and it's changed a lot since I first played it.

Project Zomboid is an alpha available on Steam, despite a few bugs I have realy been enjoying it. Its not really a straight up fps shooter although some shooting is involved. Bludgeoning zombies is a lot quieter and won't attract the hordes. Its more of a zombie survival game and is pretty unique as a genre.

Have you played any of the Fallout series? (like Fallout: New Vegas) It's a RPG but also a FPS.

State of decay is alright, a bit lightweight compared to dayZ type stuff, but it includes setting up outposts, fortifying your base and finding resources as well as helping or recruiting other survivors. If you die your character is permanently dead and you take over another survivor from your shelter.
I got it cheap in a steam sale, it's an xbox conversion so the grahics are nothing special and the UI is a bit in your face but it plays ok.

I'd highly recommend State of Decay too.

It's a port from an Xbox store game, so limited to 2GB in size, which is where it suffers in content & graphics (though the graphics aren't that bad...just last generation console standard).

However, the gameplay is really quite fun.

It's got it's problems, and isn't going to last as long as other full blown releases, but for it's price it was very enjoyable, and with the Breakdown DLC it has a bit longer lasting appeal as the difficulty ramps up.

But do bear in mind what it is. It's not a full blown game...as it was limited to 2GB in size due to the restrictions for Xbox Online store games, and the PC version is no different. Of course, like most PC games, the modding community helps set this apart from the console version, and there are some decent mods out there which expand/ improve certain aspects of the gameplay.

This was a 'trial run' of sorts to see how a game like this would play. Undead Labs are now working on a full blown release game, but that's probably a year or two away. But this still offers a lot of entertainment as far as the Zombie Genre goes.

Got State Of Decay in the end. I wasn't sure about a third person game initially but it's really grown on me - it's a third person adventure game when you want, and an FPS when it's appropriate too. Good fun. Only just got to the extent of building outposts and upgrading the base but it seems like theirs a bit of potential there.

SoD fans - I'm slightly narked. Having played through the main game I bought Breakdown, thinking it'll be more of the same. Rather irritatingly it really is more of the same - I'm playing on the same map, with the same layout, same towns...exactly the same as before. At the very least I thought I'd be paying for a new area to explore. Is that normal? If so, what exactly is the point of Breakdown?

I never got the DLC, so I don't know if that's normal or not, sorry

It was half price last week (£2.50) so seemed daft not to.

Dead Island? I picked it up on Steam over a year ago dirt cheap, still good fun game! The original being better than the sequel, should still be very cheap.

Left 4 Dead 2 was for free on steam on New years day I believe.
Few new titles coming out soon like DeadLight.
