Difference tween standard 997 CD/radio and BOSE surround

Hi there

I have opened my first chapter of forthcoming Porsche ownership, by test driving a 2005 997 C2S. A lovely car to drive.

A question I would be very grateful if anyone could answer.

The car I test drove had a standard Porsche CD/radio player. However, I have seen a number of like cars, which have a Porsche Bose Surround system.

Please can you tell me if there is much of a difference between the two. I tend to play CDs and listen to the radio (at the moment).

The saying goes "Bose - all mids, no highs or lows". I despised mine so much I kept it off for a year until I had something decent installed.

That said, I have heard the standard setup and it is bad too. The best way to describe it is the standard setup sounds bad, and the Bose just colours the sound so it also sounds bad but in a different way...! To the untrained ear "coloured" sound may sound better but do not expect the music to come alive.

In terms of buying a car Bose should not be a deal breaker, but don't lust after one as they are not great. Porsche have never done audio as well as the rest of the car.

I think Sonny sums it up perfectly.

I have BOSE in mine and play music from my iPod. Some stuff sounds fantastic whilst other stuff is rubbish (embarrassingly bad). I put this down to the quality of the file on the iPod, eg bit rate as much as I do the BOSE itself. There's a lot of road noise from the tyres and rumble from the engine, so don't expect musical sound perfection with either standard set up option.

Impossible to tell the difference between standard 911 music and Bose.....if there is one option to delete when speccing, Bose would be it, especially at c £700.....

In contrast, BMWs Harman Kardon systems upgrade are worth every penny.....
