Carbon Cannister
Discussion
I'm sure this has probably been covered before but as I've fully decatted my 450 do I need to retain my Carbon can. I seem to remember reading somewhere that I don't need it but if I can remove it, what do I need to do with the trumpet base vacuum hose, electrics to the can and can I then just fit a brether to the fuel tank hose down at the back end somewhere near the diff perhaps ?
As ever any advice much appreciated
P.S. SC kit should at long last be here next week so all being well will be making a start next weekend

Thanks Anthony & Daz, I'll go with a breather somewhere near the diff I think & get rid of the hose running the full length of the chassis (will save on a few cable ties as well !) But what do I need to do with the wiring that also goes to the can, just rip it out or do I need to just join it together & complete a circuit ? Thanks Again

Sorry, didn't do the work myself so wasn't aware there was any.Make sure when you vent it that it is well outside the car, or you will get overcome by fumes when standing in traffic.

What is the carbon canister and why is it better to remove it for decatted cars?
I've just had the pre-cats taken out and a decat y piece fitted so should i also be doing something else?
Thanks
Karl
The carbon canister is in the driver's side front wing, just behind the indicator. It collects "stuff" that would otherwise cause the car to break emission limits.I've just had the pre-cats taken out and a decat y piece fitted so should i also be doing something else?

You have already decided to "do your bit for the environment" by decatting, so the carbon canister is kinda pointless. It does no harm being there, especially if you don't have a friendly MOT station and have to put the main cat back in at MOT time.
The reasons I am thinking of removing mine are two fold. To remove a redundant hose from the chassis & engine bay to de-clutter & lose some cable ties (I don't like them), and make some space in the inner wing to try and move my washer bottle back to "hide" it from view, we spend a lot of time trying to make our cars look neat and tidy but the cheap looking white plastic bottle poking out of the nose doesn't do it for me.
P.S. I do have a friendly MOT station

If you completely remove the entire cannister and vale/relay - you will start getting issues with your tank either pressurising, or getting vacuum, and will have to manually equalise the pressure on longer drives by opening the petrol cap...
When I upgraded to Emerald, I lost control of the carbon cannister - with the result that my petrol tank pressurises to the extent that I can "levitate" and balance the fuel filler cap on the outgoing rush of air/vapour for a couple of seconds after a long run...!

If I fit a decent breather to a shortened length of the hose (somewhere around the rear axle / diff) from the tank wouldn't that solve the problem with vacuum/ pressurisation ?When I upgraded to Emerald, I lost control of the carbon cannister - with the result that my petrol tank pressurises to the extent that I can "levitate" and balance the fuel filler cap on the outgoing rush of air/vapour for a couple of seconds after a long run...!

Does anyone know when the vapours are released in to the plenum .I have read forums where it can lower your fuel consumption and make the car harder to start .
No it wont
the vapors are pulsed into the intake if this was an issue current vehicles would not use this tech in fact everything does
I also had mine wired up to a switched output before deciding to rip it all out and go pre 80's style venting to atmosphere I have never experienced pressurization or vacuum effects either before or after and no nasty smells

My Emerald instal controls the valve happily enough... Just used one of the programmable pin outs and came up with some open and close parameters... I'm assuming there's a check valve between the plenum and can? What do the SC cars do with it?
Hey Pupp, do you have any more detailed info on how you achieved this..?I want to get it back working - at the time of install, apparently Emerald's advice was to leave it unattached, so they did, with the result that mines doesn't vent any more
