Hi Guys,

I've currently got a corolla t-sport, love the car but she's drinking me dry on long journeys frown.

I've been looking for a suitable replacement with top runners being the civic 2.2 cdti and golf 2.0 gt tdi - both are still quick, have options for remapping and I can fit the dog in the boot.

Can anyone else think of any other quick (ish) cars with good mpg with decent boot space?

Not exactly hot hatches though are they? If you're after a dog friendly smoker you may as well grab a 330d touring.

whats your budget? im guessing your after a diesel so Mazda 3 2.2 (185 bhp model) would be on my radar, have driven the Mazda 6 version and its very fast for a 4 cylinder diesel, infact any diesel

probably more money but BMW 123D? a mate had one and felt to be as fast as the Mazda

Your car may be thirsty but I'd be wary of getting a modern diesel, there's a lot to go wrong and also even on turbo's petrols so there's a lot to be said for a reliable if slightly thirsty car!

How thirsty is thirsty?

Is a Corolla T Sport even considered a hot hatch now? If you like it though don't they do a diesel version with 50bhp less or something?

Renaultsport Megane 175. I had one with the Cup pack on and was a superb all rounder - Driven carefully on a long journey you'll see 50+ mpg

lpg the 'rolla for £800. Take you 10k miles for it to pay for itself, then enjoy 40% cheaper motoring.

Same 170 bhp diesel as the golf but with a much bigger boot. I average 46mpg from mine but can get over 50 on a tank when commuting further.

I think the diesel was producing around 180bhp and had the irs of the petrol version.

I had one for 3 years and 35k miles .They are THIRSTY for what they are put it this way my nearly stage 2 mps is much better on juice on a motorway at 30mpg + were the t sport would get 24mpg .

The tsport will get you 250-265 miles to a tank (brim to light 45 litres)
The mps will get to 225-250 miles brim to light 43 litres

so 190bhp vs 320ish it is quite thirsty.

It is a hot hatch if you change the springs and put a k&n typhoon on it , as stock its warm.

Shock horror modern turbocharged petrol engine does better mpg than a naturally aspirated engine!

My 190 Celica did 36ish mpg - not that I regularly worked it out! I can't imagine that being a little bit more aerodynamic made it 10mpg more economical than if it were fitted to a Corolla!

A hot hatch is not what you're looking for OP, if it's MPG you're after. Sounds like you're looking for an entertaining diesel, which is worlds apart from a hot hatch.

i worked mine out , probably my foot but thats what i got between the 2 on the same journeys .

Agreed for the OP the t sport isnt for you , you want a diesel especially if you get a a 170bhp VAG lump, then go dpf delte and remap it would be quicker than the t sport and much much better at the pumps.

Octavia VRS is ok on fuel and comfy on long journeys but the fabia VRS (Diesel) is certainly worth a look if you do long journeys (so i'm assuming lots of motorway dual carriageway use).

Do some research and find out what diesels have a DPF and which dont. For example, my wifes BMW 120D is on an 05 plate, and has no DPF (allegedly - evidence is the exhaust exit points "down" as opposed to "straight").

It dosnt get great fuel economy though (45 mpg on a good day) but its proving quite reliable. Yearly oil changes, air and fuel filters every other year and its going alright.

Look for soemting similar maybe from BMW? 320D touring or soemthing?

Read this tread with interest but a little disappointed as I'd like to know what proper hot hatches are actually decent on fuel.

Im interested in getting rid of my POS Alfa and going for something a touch more entertaining - for business use though I need to be able to genuinely manage 35mpg(ish) when taking it easy on a long journey.

£6kish budget.

Golf GTI?
Megane RS?
Civic Type R?

Pretty much ruled out the Focus ST immediately.

Spelling and MOT

The vag 170 engine does have a dpf , my mate got it gutted .Now if the mot guy has x-ray vision hes in trouble otherwise he will be fine.

Markt123 and Pimpchez, i dont know what your doing wrong!

On my commute to work, which is mainly B road, and often trips into Lift to cheer up my journey, i average around 34mpg!

A trip on the motorway and im between 38-40.

Is my car special or am i driving it differently?!

(Pimpchez) K&N typhoon would probably of been hurting the MPG to be fair.

Civic will get that on a run ok. Mine has averaged 33-34 mpg over 12,000 miles.
