I have a red Cooper in very good condition but I don't like it and want to sell it. I would say I would advertise it at £2800 and try and sell it.
Now, the problem. It has a rumble in the gearbox.

I have a quote of £500 to replace the clutch with new and a recon gearbox with 12m warrantee.

Would you replace and sell advertising the new gearbox, replace and advertise not mentioning the new box, or take a cut and sell as is?

Car is lovely otherwise, with half leather, serviced 2k ago.

Get the gearbox repaired and then sell, if funds allow. It will definitely make it an easier sell, and will add a small premium onto the final value

If you're selling with a faulty gearbox, then you will end up selling at a greater loss than the £500 it will cost to replace the gearbox.

Was the quote from Mini Gearboxes by any chance?

It was Mini gearboxes, John Tee. Why do you ask?

£500 seems a most reasonable quote to me for something that most punters will run away from if left unrepaired.

A recon gearbox & new clutch fully fitted on mine was more like £1750. The price didn't bother me as it was being paid for by the warranty as I'd only had the car a few days wink

I had my gearbox & clutch swapped out by them in 2011 on my 2001 Cooper. Great service, I think it was £650 back then, and it took them no more than 2.5 hours! They dropped me at the Coventry Transport museum, great way to kill a few hours.
