F10 m5 owners thoughts
Discussion
Hi guys
After looking for something to replace our SQ5 due to the relatively small boot ( got a wee one on its way and the pram chassis fits but doesn't leave much space) we have been looking at fast estates for all the load lugging duties, but I am not fully sold on the need for a estate.
After always loving the look of the new audi RS4 we had one over a weekend, beautiful looking car and more than enough space , but missed the torque that makes driving the SQ5 so effortless. The engine sounded stunning when being revved hard but that's not how the wife drives day to day and she even commented at low revs it felt a bit flat.
So we continued looking about , RS6 would be nice but is simply mentally priced. I came across the offers from eastern western bmw on the F10 M5 and the new up coming M3 , I do know that I missed the frankly mental zero percent deal but hey ho . Popped into the dealership down in Edinburgh and on seeing the car they have in the showroom all I can say is WOW, Monte Carlo blue with the optional 20" wheels ,beautiful interior and what looks like a huge boot.
Gordon the M power sales manager could see that I was drooling and offered a test drive in a 2012 model they just brought in but it was running the standard 19" alloys. Going through all the standard features in the car inc various drive settings was a bit overwhelming , but once on the move these were quickly forgotten about. Even initially the torque is there in bucket loads but when pushing on ........... WOW is all I can say .
After that nice drive with a mixture of roads I think I am in love with it, but it's not ordered yet till we can get them to offer a decent price as a trade in for our audi. So I am looking for owners thoughts on these beasts from a day to day point of view, fuel economy ( I know I know but helps the bank manager/wife say yes ) any dct quirks when driving in stop start traffic etc , plus ideally anyone else that has prams etc in the boot
Cheers guys

Owned mine 6 months or so now, put quite simply the best all round car I have owned. 21 mpg average last 6000 miles. Big boot no prams but takes everything I have thrown at it. Tyres still 3mm+. Oil every 1500 miles, FOC top ups if I am passing BMW. Sports seats are superb and all that leather makes it a lovely place to be, B&O stereo is the best I have ever heard in a car,and the Carbon brakes are immense, even the Mrs loves to drive it and has told me not to sell it, unfortunatly it will be in the next 2-3 months. Only quibble was initially setting of from start on damp roads but you adapt your driving.. Mid range the car is just about as fast as anything I have owned.

Do yourself a favour and take one for a few days first, IF this dealership is any good they will lend you one for a few days or more, if they refuse, dump them and go elsewhere. After looking for something to replace our SQ5 due to the relatively small boot ( got a wee one on its way and the pram chassis fits but doesn't leave much space) we have been looking at fast estates for all the load lugging duties, but I am not fully sold on the need for a estate.

Then make your decision IMO.
I had one for a week before ordering the LCI M5.
Boot takes 4 sets of golf bats so I can't imagine a pram would be a problem.
DCT is perfect. Paddle shift changes are instant. I've never once thought what's it doing in auto and it really suits the dual personality of the car. I can understand the manual argument in a GT3 / weekend toy but for an daily drive luxury saloon most of the time I just let it think for its self.
My commute is 15 miles of mixed roads (village, twisty NSL, 50mph SPECS dual carriage way)but no motorway and minimal queues and I average 19 including some M button use. I drove it once like a saint with a light foot just to see what was possible and got 22. For comparison my old 330i did 29.
I ordered mine after a test drive in a 520d (so the wife could get used to the size)and have never once regretted it.

Cheers for getting back to me guys, problem is that I am up in Aberdeen and Eastern bmw is down in Edinburgh so I can't see them loaning me it, but I suppose I could always ask.
Just got the measurements from the emmaljunga pram supplier and it's 91cm x59cm , I took a quick measurement on sat but I am fairly sure it will fit length ways between the rear shock towers as it's about 91-92cm.
Not going wild on options but this is our choice
Alpine white
20" silver 343m alloys
Privacy glass
Sakhir orange leather
Harmon kardon
Internet
That's about it, as you can see nothing too wild

I had one for a few days and would recommend the multi function seats, probably the most comfortable and supportive thing I have ever parked my arse on. It's a cracking car, though I still haven't made my mind up, it's the lack of 4wd that bothers me more than anything as I live in the Peak District.

Your comment on the oil top ups every 1500 miles got me worried .. on 6K miles and not top ups except 1200 mile servicescorchio said:

Split seats? I love the fact I can put my bike in the back or load up for the tip run.Just got the measurements from the emmaljunga pram supplier and it's 91cm x59cm , I took a quick measurement on sat but I am fairly sure it will fit length ways between the rear shock towers as it's about 91-92cm.

Had mine for nearly 2 years now and done 30,000 miles.
Excellent all round - I bought an ex-demo which has almost everything on it and the things I would consider for extras are:
split rear seats - if they are not standard
multi function seats - they are the best I have had in any car
shame for saying this, but the surround camera system - really helps for parking (the Gallactic Emperor was concerned about the size of the car but finds it relatively easy to park with the camera system)
And my average mpg is 19 point something
Tyres last for ever which I think is some kind of voodoo magic given the weight of the car and the power on tap
Mine drinks oil - a litre every two or three thousand miles - so I always keep a supply in the garage rather than faff around with going to the dealer

Do it! We stick a smaller pram (bugaboo) in ours and still has space to spare.
Options: get the reverse camera, the sensors are cautious. Its the one option I wish I had.
I have the bog standard seats and they are supremely comfy and supportive. Never tries the fancy M ones so can't comment on those.
Oh yeah and if dealing direct with dealer get them to throw in the running in service for free.

Yeah that was one option I was defo thinking about as it will add just a bit more flexibility , odd one but does the m5 have auto headlamps as standard ? .What is it with fooking salesmen, not listening to you or just never getting back to you ? . Called Aberdeen bmw on sat afternoon to see if they could offer the same if not better and I am still waiting on a call back, never had this issue with Audi
I picked up my M5 LCI from Eastern mid Oct. Its the best all round car I have ever owned. Truely amazing. It replaced my 997 C2S and 2012 C63....both awesome cars but nothing can touch the M5. Albeit I am now searching for a solution to carry my cons bike any suggestions welcome. WRT consumption I haven't monitored that but can say its much better than the C63!
I have been driving it in sports plus mode as it makes a far better sound.
Good luck!

I note there are a few more comments re: oil consumption. If you haven't done so already, would you mind voting on:

Our new arrival (2 weeks old) has an iCandy Peach Jogger which is hardly a small travel system, but it fits easily in the wives Q5 as it does in my M5.Only thing that is a bit too large is the ISOFIX base for the Maxi Cosi pebble as it's very deep so front passenger seat needed moving forward a touch to accommodate. Baby won't be going in the M5 (got Silverstone leather) so no car seat worries.
Mines a Singapore Grey LCi (got it in Sept). Added Harmon Kardon & Power Boot & love the car. Had a few RS's (4 & 6) & more recently an R35 GT-R & this M5 is by far the best car i've ever had.

I bought an M5, just like your dream car, from Eastern in May.
The journey back south down the east of the country was amazing.
My car has done 8000 miles, averaging 21mpg....does not go through oil (v10 drank a litre every 3000 miles), tyres are lasting well. The car does the everyday stuff superbly, comfortable, smooth, fab technology.....and you don't look and feel like a prick like you do in a 911!! The performance is stunning. In fact, I only recently drove mine again in its most extreme settings (cold, damp for weeks....sun came out)....it was laugh out loud quick, even faster than I remembered it.
It really is a road going monster which, when push comes to shove, dispenses with opposition very dismissively.
Mind out for your licence!!

Jazzer, which route would you suggest back down South - any options other than the obvious?

Thankfully mate we are only having one, it's the emmaljunga 3-1 with classic chassis. We tried the chassis in the SQ on sat after being at bmw ( ours hasn't been delivered yet, this was in the pram shop) and in length ways we couldn't shut the boot lid, turn it sideways and it goes in ok but doesn't leave much room for the carrycot , we have bought a recaro seat protector so the leather should be ok .

How do you find the Harmon kardon ? , I would love the B&O as we have it in the Audi and it's really good ...... Might play about with the spec
. So the ultimate question with both car keys on the table which would you take , M5 or GTR ? Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
