Folks,

The GFs car got broken into last night, drivers door lock punched through and the stereo etc taken frown

What are the options here? The lock mechanism is in bits and the central locking alarm fob is no longer working (standard pug fitment system). In addition, the mess they have made pushing the lock through into the door means that the hole in now bigger than it should be, meaning another lock cannot be retro fitted. You can currently simply put your finger in and open the door:

The car is an old 306 HDI, but it’s dearly loved by my GF (and me for that matter) and I want to sort out the damage.

I'm thinking wack a new door on (£40 - ebay) and then get an auto electrician to get the central locking up and working again? Does this sound feasible? The drivers door lock would be different to the others, but as long as the remote central locking is working it shouldn’t be an issue.
Any ideas why buggering the drivers door lock up would stop the remote central locking working on the other door / boot?

Any advice gratefully received smile

Is the CL not working at all or just on that damaged door?

Could the actuator being jammed stop the CL from working? Does the CL work with the key in the passenger door?

I replaced one of the CL actuators in my ZX some years back with one from a scrappy and it was a really simple job. I'd go with a door from a scrappy, swap the drivers and passengers door locks over, and accept that I wouldn't be able to open the passenger side with the key...assuming you can get the remote to work.

Put another door on and make sure it's reported to the police. I've had this done to me as well, a gang swept through the area in one night, did a load of cars and disappeared never to be seen again.

In some cases taking more measures against the same thing happening again is more hassle than it's worth. Delocking the new door will just move the target area to the window etc

ETA - you might well be able to take the lock mechanism out and swap them over so you keep the same lock set

306 is a different setup. The actuator is inside the locking mechanism, rather than screwed to the outside like the ZX.

Replacing the front door is very easy. We've had several 306s & the wiring from the A-pillar to the door breaking is a known problem & its easier to repair with the door off.
Lower the window - makes it easier when you lift the door off.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the front of the door.
Remove the roll pin in the middle of the checkstrap.
Remove the vertical bolts from the middle of the hinges.
Lift the old door off.
Fitting the replacement just reverse the above.

Can you get reinforcement plates for the lock area? VAG cars of the 80/90s were quite vulnerable around the handle, so a reinforced plate was produced that sits between handle and bodywork.

If this sort of thing is common in your area, I'd be tempted to leave the car unlocked yet immobilized and the glovebox empty and open..

blimey it must have been a decent stereo!

So frustrating though when a stereo is £50 and the ****ts have just created damage worth that value and then some if you have to get a new door, get it fitted, painted and then get a new stereo.

I assume this is also one of those situations where you have a £250 insurance excess which combined with the increase in premium the following year(s) makes insurance pointless :-(

You have my sympathy , and that's from someone whose timing chain failed at the weekend writing off my engine an possibly the car.

PH folk, as ever your words and advice - much appreciated smile

As has been said, so annoying that this much damage has been caused all for a basic car head unit that will probs be worth £10 max down the boozer shoot

I did think it might be worth just leaving the damage and never locking the car again. The thing is though, as the pug is such a frugal little beast we quite often use it to go away at weekends / chomp up and down the motorway, and that means we have luggage etc and want to be able to secure the car when parked up away from home.

Oh well - worse things happen at sea as they say. I'll crack on with getting hold of a new door.

CL totally dead on all doors via the fob and also when I tried the key in the passenger door (boot lock not releasing).

Can I just say - bloody hell, HOW MUCH noise must they have made doing that? And no-one heard it? IS the car parked far away from your house or something? yikes

Smacking a lock through makes a much less noticeable noise than smashing a window, that's why they do it. 90's Fords used to be nightmare for this, you could get the lock through with one heavy clump.

It's parked off the road to the side of my property - I reckon you can get away with quite a lot after dark in a busy city judging from the amount of smashed windows and pealed doors that I see on my early morning walk into work furious

When I got home from work I discovered that a neighbours car was also done last night, smashed 1/4 light & stereo gone etc.

Whilst living in Cardiff my poor old mk2 Fiesta and later mk3 Fiesta were broken into over a dozen times in two years and not once was a window smashed.

It got so bad I used to take the parcel shelf out to show there was nothing in the boot, leave the glove box door open, remove the whole stereo unit (remember those units with the pull handle to take the entire unit!!) and yet on one occasion someone punched the lock through got in , had a rummage around and left with my Magic Tree - New car scent and fairly fresh to - now that is low!

I really didn't think thieves bothered punching locks anymore, every car I've seen broken into recently, has just had a window put through.

Either that or they just steal the keys. A young woman down the street from us, had her 3 week old corse stolen from her. They broke into her house and took her handbag which had the keys inside.

Mk2 Fiestas/anything with a flat key was easy pray. If you had a handful of keys it was quite likely that one of them would open the passenger door. Didn't improve much with the upgraded key, was proper handy for pranking your mates though hehe

Had the front windows bashed in 3 times on my old Fiesta ST. Driver side twice and the passenger side once.

Made the mistake of thinking my parking was secure, left a satnav out once. Theives made an attempt at coming back to get the replacement twice in one week just over a month later. Of course it wasn't in the car, but that didn't stop them.

I left the glove box open after that.

Of course, that didn't stop them removing the bumper, spoiler and side skirts a year later (all standard items). Had to get rid of the car as it simply wasn't worth the hassle.

Shame, it was a nice little car and the Mountune kit made it really quite nippy on trackdays.

Seriously, god only knows what I'd do if I caught someone on my property let alone in my cars!! 5yrs prob.
