Field Service Engineer to...?

Afternoon all - I'm hoping that someone here has been in a similar situation and might have some advice.

I've worked for the last 15 years as an electro-mechanical tech; for 12 testing and fixing optical media duplication equipment, then when the company went under I moved into a role as a service engineer calibrating and fixing ultrasonic NDT equipment in the UK and worldwide.

I'm finding, however, that the international travel is far in excess of what I (and the company) had anticipated, and it's not really compatible with my life outside of work. In the grand sceme of things, and in relation to some international service techs, it's not that much - I'd just rather not be doing it.

Trouble is, the sort of stuff that I do all seems to be field work, and whilst I don't mind occasional UK travel, I'd rather be based at a static workshop for 70%+ of the time. The unpredictable nature of the work (being sent away on overnight jobs at short notice) is getting to be a problem, but I don't see any industries that I could transfer my skills to but be doing more like standard working hours.

Does anyone have any advice? Home-counties based if that makes any difference.

I work for an Aerospace engineering/manufacturer. With the caveat of not knowing much about your experience we have a couple of roles on site that could fit eg Test/Calibration and Inspection lead or ATE Test Engineer/Technician. We don't have any vacancies but there must be similar organisations locally that do. Given the location in your profile I would try somebody like Esterline in Farnborough, Ultra in Greenford, BAE etc

Farnborough is nice and close to home - not heard of Esterline so will look into them, thanks!
