Age Related Registration

My recently aquired 1968/9 Type 34 Karmann Ghia was imported from Belgium in 1983 and registered with a Y reg. Is it possible to get an age related number and if so how to go about it? I've got a VW birth certificate if that helps.

You could just go and buy the correct age related number from any of the reg dealers or the DVLA website for not a lot of money.

You may not fit a plate that makes your vehicle appear younger than its first date of registration but you can fit a plate that makes it appear older.

Write to DVLA with the VW certificate.

Not only will they correct the date of first reg on the V5C, but they'll also change it to "Historic Vehicle", so you'll get the free tax that it should've had for the last 15-20yrs...

Are there any specific forms I need to send with it? I've looked on the DVLA website but cant see anything which says 'applying for age related number'.

Not forgetting of course that you can then have proper black and white plates.

I think DVLA will issue an age related number free of charge, G or H reg I believe.

No they won't !!! The date it was first registered in the UK will still be 1983 although it should state on the V5 that it was declared manufactured in 1969 and be classed as a historic vehicle. If this is not the case they should amend the V5 taxation class to historic vehicle if you provide proof of age. They will not change the date of first registration because 1983 was the date it was first registered in the UK irrespective of what age the vehicle is.

Look at the V5C for any import - there are two fields with dates in. One says "Date of first registration", the other says "Date of first registration in the UK". You're right that this KG will say "1982" for the UK date, but I'm not talking about that one. I'm talking about the other one. Neither says anything about date of manufacture, although - as you say - there MAY also be a line that says "Declared manufactured 19xx" on the front page under the "notes".

If it's on a Y-plate, I _very_ much doubt it's registered as a historic.

This has always amused me, buy a pre 63 car, take the plate off and if you don't want a non-transferrable number you will be allocated an A (1963) plate. One rule for us, on for the DVLA...
