Never really been a big red wine fan but picked up a bottle of rioja/tempranillo and really enjoyed its fruitiness & lack of dryness in the mouth.I have been reading that chianti is very similar so I would be very interested in your preference or recommendations.

Thankyou

I like both. There is more to it than just the region though.

You can take two bottles both Rioja and they can be very different to each other. The grape or grape mix is the obvious one here Tempranillo is the main grape in this case. The same applies to Chianti, although this is historically made of 3 different specific grape types. Year and age will also have an impact.

Go to a specialist wine merchant that does tastings and tell them what you want. This will be the best approach, or try different bottles from your supermarket of choice.

If you like Chianti try a Barbaresco as well.

Same grape as Barolo but better to drink when it's younger. Its also a lot cheaper.

Costco do a very nice one for £8.
