So i had considered upgrading my standard alex wheels a while back but never did. Now i see people rate fulcrum 5 and mavic askiums that are in my price range (i decided adding another £100 or so wasnt worth it). Just browsing on merlin i see the have Cole c24 dx for £220 from £400.. Has anybody any experience with these?
I bought Fulcrum Race 5's for £160 over the lighter Planet X AL30s for £150. I had the AL30s predecessor and the brake track wore faster than expected and the freehubs are made of cheese. Not fitted them yet but they look good

No experience of Cole but I too went from Fulcrum 7s to Zondas, its a massive leap imho, like day and night and well worth the extra cash. I'm not sure I see much value in going from your current wheelset to something like Aksiums/5s that are a bit better, make it a worthwhile upgrade. The Zonda hubs run so smoothly you'd think they were much more than £300 and the all round finish is very high standard. My next wheelset upgrade will almost certainly be campagnolo again.
Not sure of your budget but I have a set of RS80 C24's on my winter bike and they are very good. Planet-X have the newer version (RS81's) for £299 - 1500 gms, carbon laminate rims with alloy braking surface and double sealed bearings that help keep the floods out of your hubs!
They are lightweight, look nice, are stiff and reasonably inexpensive - but being Shimano they are not trendy hoops!

Yeah I know, like Seat is Audi..... Sure whilst there is some crossover of technology and development, I cant see Campag giving all their tech to the offshoot, particularly when Fulcrum was established so Campag could comete across the price range...Edited by anonymous-user on Wednesday 12th February 11:31
That was my concern... Am i not spending enough for them to be any differet what so ever.. It depends on who you ask the question it would appear!

I'll take a look at the rs81 - im not after them being "trendy" im just after the best out of my budget. Im only about 70kgs so not too heavy either.
Im guessing unless i should also buy some fresh rubber like the conti 4000s?

If you can stretch to the Zondas without too much pain then it will be a much more worthwhile upgrade, hoenstly they really are a fantastic wheelset, I'm 82 kgs and they are still true and I had reservations about the spoke count/pattern but they have been impressively durable. Tyre wise I am sticking to Michelin Pro Race 3s till everyone runs out of stock, at £20 each they are a steal! I found they had more grip than GP4000s with rolling resistance suffering fractionally.
I'd look at the American Classic Victory 30 too, they are also about £300.
