Audi S1 - official

Four-wheel drive, a 2.0-litre turbo and 231hp for Audi's new hot hatch baby

The hot hatch world has just got that bit hotter with confirmation today of the new Audi S1. Meaning if you liked the look of the A1 Quattro but couldn't stomach the £40K pricetag or left-hand drive only your wait hasn't been in vain. Indeed, although the S1 has 231hp against the A1 Quattro's 256hp it actually has more torque with 272lb ft against 258lb ft. Other performance figures - including the 5.8-second 0-62mph time and 155mph top speed - are pretty much the same. Like the A1 Quattro the S1 runs a six-speed manual, not the compulsory seven-speed dual-clutch of the 1.4 TFSI.

How much the official S1 shares with the more skunk works A1 Quattro will remain to be seen but this kind of power and four-wheel drive brings a new level of potency to the hot hatch world. Available in three-door and five-door Sportback formats, from the initial batch of pictures it'd appear you can have your S1 in the traditional low-key S look with trademark chrome mirrors or with a more in-your-face Quattro pack that includes a large wing and side graphics. This also livens up the interior with additional flashes of colour while sports seats with integrated headrests are also available.

Mechanically the S1 runs permanent four-wheel drive with an electronically controlled rear locking differential that works in partnership with two-stage ESC. This means 'e-diff' style brake interventions to the inside wheels in bends as well as electronic torque distribution, which the promise of resulting improved agility and adjustability. Audi's also tweaked the steering and boasts of 'modified pivot bearings' on the front axle to 'improve spontaneity when turning' while the rear axle uses a four-link independent design. The familiar Audi Drive Select configurability also features, acting on the standard-fit adjustable dampers (described as 'sporty and firm') and various other functions too. Bigger brakes also feature, optionally available with branded red calipers if you so wish. 17s are standard, 18s optional.

Standard S1 is the more stealthy option

That's a lot of tech for a hot hatch. A hell of a lot, prompting the inevitable 'how much' question. Audi has confirmed orders opening in March for spring delivery and starting prices of £24,900 for the three-door and £25,630 for the Sportback. Don't forget, there's going to be a Polo R equivalent too...

Audi used to be such a subtle brand, what's happened? Does this engine really need four (tail)pipes to breath sufficiently?

The exhaust pipe editorial from months ago still resonates in my head.

Sounds good. I imagine it will look better in the metal.

Pricing is a good indication of what the Polo R will cost too as people were speculating it would be around £25k so should be a bit lower.

In 3-door form and a loud colour this looks really good. Does 'full time 4wd' mean a Torsen quattro system then or is it stuck with a Haldex system like most small Audis?

Wonder if this will help quell the O/H interest in a Mini. At face value looks good to me.

That is exactly what I was thinking. If it ditches the Haldex for a proper 4wd system I'd be seriously interested.

That's cool.

AFAIK 5th gen haldex is permanently engaged and effectively has electronic slip diffs at either end.

S1 has 231hp, 272lb ft, 4wd

Anyone else feel it should do better than a 5.8-second 0-62mph time?

Really glad led headlights are filtering down the ranges so quickly, they look great.

I like this Audi a lot, not sure on the yellow but in that Audi blue I bet of looks fantastic

A car that small shouldnt be allowed to do 155mph in my opinion.

Will be interesting though what the next JCW is going to look like against this or even if they do a Pug 208 R. I can imagine though with Audi's strong pricing the Mini will undercut my some margin.

At this size of car i'm not overly fussed by 4wd and 220-240bhp is easily put down nowadays with just the front wheels. Will they do a standard Mini with 4wd now?

Looks good with the styling options. Not too sure about the quad exhausts though.

Sounds a bit like a modern day 8L Audi S3 when reading the article again.

Bet they are similar sizes.

No doubt will be a proper B road weapon, the price seems so steep for such a little car. But I suppose when you take into account its performance it is reasonable.

My old S3 would only manage similar to 60 with 270bhp/283lbft so that sounds decent to me.

Please Audi make an RS1 with the 2.5l i5. Pretty please.

I'll be waiting for the Polo R. Never really liked the look of the A1. Will there be a DSG option available? Would put me off if it's only manual.

5.8 0-60mph does seem a little slow given the power. I would expect low 5's for such a small and light car (maybe not so light?). I have a standard A1 as a runaround, 1.2 petrol. It is a fantastic car. Better value than my S5 and I actually enjoy driving it more. A bit underpowered though when pulling off so the S1 should be fantastic.

I wonder if they're still offering the Audi SPORT sticker pack? Would look great on a white S1.

Might have to show SWMBO...
