Big Twin playing in the wind

Just been watching a twin engined Cessna or such like messing about in the strong gales. At full chat he'd make some headway into the wind and then throttle back to effectively a hover with nigh-on zero ground speed. It's very unnerving to see!

What do you estimate the wind speed to have been?

I expect that will be an interesting entry in the logbook, assuming it's something that is recorded.

I've seen a 90kt wind at 1000' before. The GS can be painfully slow! I imagine that Cessna had a bit of a bumpy ride!

When the Raf had Pembrokes I had a chat with a pilot and they had been overtaken by a cross channel ferry!!!

To be fair the jaguars were overtaken by ferries even in tail wind conditions.

I remember taking off into a very strong headwind with my instructor once in a Grob. Surreal experience, felt like a vertical take off! Needless to say, he performed the landing. Might as well have been in a helicopter!
