Sinkhole collapses Corvette Museum display

Yes, that is a real image. A 40-feet wide, 25-feet deep sinkhole has opened up at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green and swallowed eight display Corvettes.

The damaged cars include a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder, a 2009 ZR-1, a 1962 C1, a 1984 PPG Pace Car, a 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary C4, a 2001 'Mallett Hammer' C5 ZO6, the millionth Corvette from 1992 and the 2009 car that marked 1.5 million models.

The cars were all on display in the Sky Dome section of the museum which has been entirely closed now after assessment from an engineer.

Western Kentucky is particularly susceptible to sinkholes and sinking streams as the whole area is underlain by eroded limestone called karst. It's a region with a load of deep underground caves.

Nobody has been hurt and the other cars will remain in the Sky Dome for now.

Come on , until recently Corvettes did not handle that well, but these are all good looking, V8 petrol sports cars. In a world where even one of my friends has bought a diesel (!) surely these cars are more PH than most?

That's the danger when you 'leaf springs' to naturally erode under buildings, so lets hope they can get it solid (under the) rear axle before too many people are fibreglassted............. IGMC

Regardless of all the waffle about leaf springs a Corvette is an sports car icon and I imagine some of those museum pieces are worth a fair few $$$$

The materials used and the arrangement of the springs are very different than the way people think leaf springs are used.

Many a Corvette I'd happily own if rhd, I see a red circa 2005 one most days going in the other way on the way to work - it's the best looking most interesting car I see each day.

Big sink hole on the M2 at the moment which has resulted in a chunk of the motorway being closed. On TV earlier they showed filling it full of shingle (40 tons I think they said!) & apparently more has collapsed.
