What do you get if you would like something like this:

or

or

or

but practicality (family) dictates that you need something like this:

I've been driving an SUV (2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee) for a while and have decided that my next vehicle will be a car, as I'm prepared to sacrifice some ground clearance/off-road ability for better performance and handling.

I would definitely be looking to buy one of these:

if only it was 4WD (but then I guess it wouldn't be an M5)! The roads are just so treacherous here (Canada) in winter that I would like the security of 4WD/AWD, which a 400bhp RWDer isn't going to give me!

I don't care what other people think (I was thinking more PH cool) but would like something where I don't feel hard done by for having to choose the "practical" option. I'm fairly open on age but ideally something newer and lower mileage than my current Jeep. My preference is a manual but that limits my options, so would consider an auto. I've done the whole Impreza thing and they're awesome but I'm older now so would prefer something a bit more grown up.

Is this the coolest 4WD saloon/estate out there?

They're pretty rare here (only 17 for sale on Autotrader)but tick all the boxes and I'd be looking at about 25000 pounds for a 2007 (definitely don't want to be spending any more than this). Normally the Avant version is cooler but I actually prefer the saloon version of these.

Obviously, it's not exactly going to be economical but then I'm used to 18mpg with the Jeep, so I can live with that for the near supercar performance!

How about reliability, servicing and running costs though? I presume they need V Power or similar and what are they like on fuel range (petrol stations are pretty sparse out here)!

Looking around, a D2 S8 (Ronin-style) or RS6 (the twin turbo V8 one - sorry not very good with my Audi model codes) would be about half the price but obviously older and probably much higher mileage.

Would an S4 offer a similar drive for less or are they completely different animals. I thought I heard that the manual S4s were to be avoided!

Are there any other non-Audi options that I haven't thought of?

You must be on the books at PH.

I dont even have as many thoughts as you have new threads.

I don't know about "coolest", but the Panamera is really rather good, despite the rather... dubious looks.

No, just a low boredom threshold and an overactive brain but it is a genuine question! smile

As 4WD is a requirement then the V10 RS6. Cool simply because its a twin turbo V10 in an estate car. AND the MTM remap gives them 700bhp which is completely unnecessary yet at the same time necessary if you have one hehe

I am not even going to try and define cool as it is impossible, using the term cool around here will cause a bh fight!

Depending on which side of the fence you sit I would say these fit the bill quite well

Just seen your budget, oh well

Good call. This is probably what I would get but I prefer the estate bodystyle (not available here) and the Spec B here also has the 2.5 turbo Impreza engine and an auto box. This would be a nice car with a manual but would suck with an auto probably!

Original question was what would you get that's cool yet practical. OP only said afterwards that they wanted it for themselves and must be 4x4 smile

ETA, to fulfil the OP's requirement (and the topic) stop messing around with 4WD tarmac cars and go straight for the daddy - V8 Range Rover.

the same 3.0 engine is in the outback - pretty sure they are available in canada

then again, although its a bit SUVish, theres always the infiniti FX45 - they make a great noise too
