I have just purchased an X300 (X306) XJR - I noticed driving it home this evening, that the clock does not illumination and the buttons on the stereo do not illuminate (although the lcd display panel lights up)...

Is there a fuse that links all these or is it a bulb(s) likely to be the problem?

Thanks for any advice.

there are bulbs behind which fail and by all accounts a bit of a pig to change.
Wasnt a BRG one you bought was it, another PH'er in Sussex? Do we get to see some pics?

Thanks for the stereo advice...

The car is indeed the one you are thinking of.
I'll put some pics up as soon as I have the opportunity to take some (only picked the car up this evening).

On my XJ40 those lights sometimes don't work due to a crap connection behind them, wiggling the multiplug sorts it. I doubt X300s are that different than a late XJ40 so it's probably good old British electrics hehe

Well, i fully repaired the clock today.
I removed the unit from the car, replaced two bulbs and found that the ribbon cable had separated from the PCB. I placed a thin(1.5mm)card strip behind it - and found it naturally pushed the ribbon back onto the PCB and it works perfectly now :-)

The stereo will need the assistance of a friend who knows far more about electronics than me - But i sourced the 6 bulbs (and their blue covers)and a my friend will strip down the head unit and replace the bulbs (they require soldering).

Fingers crossed, by the end of the week i'll have my dash all illuminated and working as it should.

Hi D..... Normally the company he works for ( http://www.huets.com/lamborghini.html ) would send these kind of repair jobs off to a 3rd party company for repair and i think to be honest if my friend didn't owe me a favour, the repair would likely be an uneconomical repair. BUT i really dont want an aftermarket head unit in the car.

I will ask him though, if he has any idea of the symptoms you speak of and ascertain the contact details of the 3rd party company (if you are interested)?

When I had my X300, I fitted an aftermarket radio, At first I was adamant Imwould keep the factory one, but with no changer in the boot I ended up swapping it for a good unit. I think it was an Alpine one, but it looked very discreet with no fancy lights etc. I managed to source an adaptor of EBay to fit the ski slope, to be fair you would be hard pushed to tell, but it had mp3, Bluetooth and a handy USB port. The USB alone had the full Pink Floyd discovery box set on it plus another thirty albums or so. The best 200 quid I spent for the car.

Part of the reason (in addition the the aesthetic) for my not wanting to go aftermarket. Is that i have the Harman Kardon speakers and amplifier and I have been told that in most cases (if the car is fitted with theHK) you can never completely get rid of an interference (like alternator interferience) through the speakers - when you go aftermarket.

If I had the HK system, I would have left it in also, but mine was the low end one with tape deck. the kids didn't have a clue what it was! I knew that if I just went to Halfords and bought one of the shelf, it would look odd, so I checked out some magazines and websites to find the best style. It's amazing how retro some of these systems are, you can even get them to fit into classics with the old style volume and tuner buttons, but packing some serious tech.
