Driving through floods?

I've noticed that it seems that some drivers seem to treat a flooded road like some kind of challenge, to get through it as quickly as possible regardless of the danger or the consequence to others. They give no thought to anyone else or themselves. I never fails to amaze me how may times I've got to the other end of a flooded section of road to find a line of broken down cars on the verge, because people can't seem to comprehend that there car isn't indestructible.

I always try and adjust my driving to suit and I also try to think of the consequences of creating a wake that covers oncoming traffic (basically giving them zero visibility) and anything near by, let alone the risk of filling your intake with water.

Is it just me am I just being to soft by thinking of others or is there a growing number of idiots who couldn't give a toss?

I'm afraid I give very little thought to others when driving through a flood: my objective is to get through it without any damage. Obviously, I don't go fast because I don't want to ruin my car, but no way would I be stopping in the middle of the water because some idiot has decided to go for a walk through it!

I don't think it's a "growing number" of idiots. I've seen no evidence that flooded roads twenty years ago didn't cause the same things to happen.

I suppose the ever increasing complexity and reliability of modern cars is making it less and less common for drivers to have any knowledge of how they actually work, which wont help. I wonder what proportion of drivers know where their air intake is? Actually, I wonder what proportion of PHers know where their air intake is?

I recall discussions about a legal case around an Espace (I think) sometime in mid 90s that had hydro-blocked going through a deepish puddle - I think generally air-intakes had been much higher on older cars. There is also a lot more turbo diesels around now than back then (there is a lot more cars as well)
