What Car...for the MiL

My mrs wants to buy her Mum a car and I know nothing about cars with the following requirements...

Auto
Cheap VED (so under 120g CO2)
5 door
Size-wise she was thinking golf/focus ish but I doubt anything that size and auto will have a low enough VED...
Warranty would be good (I was looking at Kia/Hyundai for their 7yr warranties)

Any suggestions?

I suspect the mileage will be low...so I'd go for petrol despite higher one-off tax costs.

They're retired, already have one car and have to live on a small pension. So, yes, a once-per-year VED payment on a 2nd car does make a difference to them. Now piss the fk off.


To everyone else, thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't even considered a Prius, that's maybe not a bad shout at all. Budget is pretty fluid to be honest, somewhere 5-7k would be good.

Perhaps they could spend £4000 on a car an then have money left over to tax it for 10 years?

They have 2 cars and baulking at maybe 105 quid a year on VED?

A £7000 Jazz is all the car they will ever need except the £105 paper disc in the left hand corner of the windscreen might put them off.

I wasnt trying to be rude.
Although i knew it would be interpreted that way.
£100 per year is going to be alot less than the depreciation a £5000 car
Then you have the added expense of repairing and maintaining all the additional fuel saving measures.

Personally i would be looking for a car that has the best trade off between fuel economy and reliability.

I can see Benbay's point. Given the cost of absolutely everything concerned with running a car these days, a few quid extra on the tax shouldn't make too much of a difference and certainly didn't ought to be a consideration in choosing a car in the first place. You'll save £500 over 10 years by buying a car which is a tax band lower, but could happily spend that in extra fuel for buying something which is less well suited to their style of driving so does few MPG (for example). A few years ago, I knew a lady who purchased a brand new Peugeot 406 petrol auto. It wasn't really a car she wanted, but it came with cheap rate finance, so she reasoned that she'd save money over a more desirable car with stronger residuals but a higher APR. Lo and behold, three years on she comes to sell the Pug and it's worth about £500 because no one wants an automatic, petrol powered Peugeot 406. Had she bought a Golf diesel, she'd have paid an extra £1000 in interest and sold the car for £5000 more, making her a net profit.

Take away the restrictive road tax requirement and you'll find they'll probably be quids in in the long run. In all fairness, if an extra £50/year in tax is too much for them, we must question whether they can actually afford the car in the first place.
