Why are jobs always now referred to as "opportunities" ? I hate that word.
And why advertise a job (either staff or contract) without specifying the salary/rate ? You have to wonder about the cretins that work in personnel departments.
Because how much pay an employee is a compromise between their perception of their worth to you and your perception of their worth to you. You don't want to fantastic people because you or they don't think they fit into some artificial salary band. And why advertise a job (either staff or contract) without specifying the salary/rate ? You always need to know the expected salary/rate beforehand, or otherwise how else do you know if you are wasting your time to start with ? craigjm said:
I agree, I never apply for a job where it just says competitive or doesn't state.
It does seem odd that they ask what the applicant would accept/anticipate as an hourly rate. The implication is that the lower the hourly rate the applicant declares, forget about suitability/qualifications etc, the more likely they are to be offered the job. Is that the best way to entice quality applicants,,,,,not a particulary attractive MO I have to say. Is it an imported idea, from the US perhaps, doesn't sound very 'British' to me. I'm with you Craig, they should declare the salary range, from - to, depending on experience, far more civilised.

"Competitive salary/rate" is code for "piss take". And if they can't even be bothered to state a figure then that implies to me they either have no idea or are going to pitch in at some insulting figure.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some zero hour contracts in there and they play on the "privilege" of working for Aston Martin one of the "coolest" brands in the world

I could not see one for the CEO vacancy.

Probably the same as when we go in to buy a premium sports car, at the cost shown on their price list of £85,000.
Before we drive away, it has somehow become £102,000.

It's standard practice not to be upfront about salaries. All the best companies do it, from Google down, and it doesn't preclude the best applicants applying, or the salaries being huge, or employees loving it there. I don't know why they do this - maybe so competitors don't find out what they pay, or to make the application process less money-centric, or to give them an edge in negotiation.
