looking to buy this if all goes to plan:

Anyone know or seen this car before? Never bought a car this old before let alone a Porsche 911 as a second car for nursery runs! Please Don't ask.
It was either a 911 or a E46 M3. I let the heart rule.
I know about all the RMS, IMS, Hartech yadda yadda. But just throwing caution to the wind and just feel like treating myself or the wife for that matter.

Just get it bought, look after it, drive the arse off it, and never ever again read any scare stories on the internet about Porsche 'chocolate' engines.
I bought our 02 Boxster 3 years ago with patchy SH, & since then we've put on 25k with barely a problem, apart from a window regulator and freshening up the suspension.
It's my missus' daily driver (with winter tyres) and hasn't missed a beat.

It's £10K - if £10K is a sum you can afford to lose - and indeed you have more to spend atop that - then buy it, drive it, deal with any issues later.
If not - get it inspected somewhere - the list of items they come-up with may be scary but not half-as-scary BEFORE you buy it as after...
As with all car buying - you have driven a few already so you'll know a lemon when you drive it - yes? If not, do that - drive the nice, tidy expensive ones first ;0

Ask yourself 'Do I feel lucky?'. If you're in a gambling mood and the car checks out go for it.
While less owners would be good it is an old car and people often buy 911s as an aspirational box ticking exercise and move them on when they've had their fill.
Condition and evidence of recent and extensive servicing is what I'd go on.
If the car had a Hartech rebuild it would be selling for 3 or 4 grand more-that's half way to a rebuild. I'd buy and enjoy. Good luck.
edit to add: one caveat- can you afford to be without the car while the engine is rebuilt and the rebuild itself?

The car looks tidy and mileage low for the year.
I bought mine 13 months ago for 10k with 71K full history ect. Haven't regretted it.
If you don't go for an inspection try to take some one with you who can help check it over. At the end of the day it is just a car. There are good ones and bad ones.
I have spent a bit on mine over 13 months but a large chunk was a major service, new wheels and tyres. Other bits are front lower arms, trailing arms and track rod ends and the exhaust silencers as the originals were blowing on the seams.
I have spent around 2 grand but half was just the wheels and tyres.

OK, that doesn't necessarily make it a bad car but it's more than I'd be comfortable with.
I'd certainly be looking closely at the history and asking some searching questions.

Number of owners doesn't mean a thing. Mine has 7 previous owners. The last one had it for 6 years. That means the 6 that had it before him would have been paying 40k+ for it. Anyone that can spend that amount on a second hand car are not really going to be put off if a few quid needs to be spent.will be going through history today.
