SORN and 'off the road'

Hi all, if I want to sorn my car for a while but have nowhere 'off the road' to keep it, what could happen if I SORN the vehicle but leave it parked on the street but with a cover?

You'll run the risk of the vehicle being seized and additional penalties being imposed.

If caught you will be fined. If you cancel the insurance also, you will be prosecuted for that if caught, with points on your licence.

As you've said the rules are stupid, you obviously know you'd be breaking them. What answer were you expecting?

So where do they expect me to put it while it's SORN? In my living room?

I have no intention of cancelling my insurance as that runs until May. I just wanted to SORN it for a few weeks whilst I don't need it.

It's not like they are new rules.
And, in fact, many/most people agree with them to a large degree.

If your car is registered as "off the road" then it should not be on the road.

Exactly the same as if you parked it on the street without a cover. You'd get prosecuted for keeping a SORNed (uninsured?) vehicle on the road.

Don't blame SORN - which has been in place for over 15yrs. The laws stopping you keeping an uninsured/untaxed can on the road have been in place a LOT longer.

Not really their problem, but keeping it on a road without tax, MOT and insurance is unlikely to end well for you.

I think if you put a cover over the car no one has the right to lift the cover to check the tax disc.

Not too sure though. I may have just made that up.

Being incredibly silly now, what if you put the car on axel stands, so all 4 wheels are off the road?

just park it at work (if there is a place) or a friends work place/home.

It needs to be away from an area where it could be run into from anyone using the roads.

Councils often do good deals on garages, admittedly they're not always on your doorstep, but if you're not using the car for a bit it might be worth enquiring. Laid up insurance is also really cheap, think mine was about £25 for the year

A few weeks.... really? Unless you have an absolutely ridiculous VED band then the saving won't be worth the potential hassle.

Act and Section please , alternatively reference to a judgement in a higher court where this is set as precedent.

sounds very much into the realms of DD arrest not valid unless the officer was wearign a hat ... i.e. man down the publ bullst or something a Stipe ( rather than a real judge) said in the 1950s

They expect it to be off the road. Break the law, take it off the road or tax it.

Yes just a few weeks - will make all the difference right now as I have literally just moved house and am pretty skint. These things always come at the worst time. I like the idea with the axle stands

I may be able to arrange to leave it in the work car park, thanks for the good idea

I have no intention of breaking any law, I was just curious. It will still be insured and MOT'd.

6 months £125...I don't even disagree with the amount, I literally just can't spare the cash just yet.
