Cos most of us rural dwellers (and there's quite a few) only pay lip service to security.

Says the man who's just lost over £500 worth of power tools from a locked garage over the weekend.

Sorry to hear about your loss - I'm guessing the car didn't have a tilt alarm?

I meant to express sympathy by the way. I'd like blighty to be a country where one didn't have to chain/shackle/bolt everything down because you can't leave anything around for 5 mins before some git helps themselves.

Many parts of it are, and theiving scrotes aren't exactly a UK-only problem.

No comparable places have it as endemic though.

Driving through Queanbeyan couple of weeks ago (suburb of canberra, oz, and apparently a "rough" part of the neighbourhood at that) I saw a mini- motorbike thing on the grass outside someones house, "for sale" sign on it. Wouldn't last 5 minutes in the UK before some scumbag scooped it up. Loads of people have fridges full of beer, hifi equipment and evan leave power tools in their gardens. Not saying there isn't crime but there isn't the expectation of it.

I know it's only anecdotal, but I agree. I have spent quite a bit of time in the US, NZ, Aus and France and in every case have seen examples of stuff that wouldn't last ten minutes in most parts of the UK.

ETA - shared a flat with an Aussie bloke who was horrified at some telly prog with that bald git who gets himself on anything - people on markets/car boots happily tripping over themselves to buy good which were clearly shoplifted.

Of course someone will be along to say stats mean nothing but this suggests we are more violent but less "thefty" and "rapey" then Oz. Homicide rates (pretty difficult to "massage") are better for England and Wales - but those pesky Scots make up it somewhat! biggrin

PS commiseration to the OP, really wouldn't want my alloys nicked either. Hope the rest of the car is undamaged.

I get the impression that the tea-leaf was of the more considerate type, as they didn't leave the car on it's discs with dents in every panel.

I heard someone say once that a bit of paper with the reg no and a contact number put inside the tyre when fitting it can help reclaim stolen alloys, as I'd assume that at some point they'd need new tyres, and hopefully most tyre fitters have a conscience. No idea if it actually works though.

Agree and if your wheels are pretty distinctive it might be worth setting up some local ebay searches in case these turn up on there. Best of luck!

I think we have a greater problem than many because:

We have a greater head of population per square mile than most countries
Crappy areas are close to good ones
Punishments are weak

Dad's neighbour popped inside to answer the phone leaving his lawnmower on the front lawn for 3 mins.

Came out and it was gone

We had our bins stolen last year, fk knows why, but what puzzled me the most was that whoever stole them, they had the courtesy to shut the garden gate behind them when they left.
