I think I need a dreaded clutch on my A6 (2006 A6 3.0TDI Quattro, manual gear box).

Slipped slightly going uphill in 3rd on Saturday, apparently the wife experienced something similar a couple of weeks ago as well.

Car is on 76k miles.

Have had part prices from local Audi:

Clutch only @ £340
Clutch & DMF @ £1129

These don't include labour, I'm waiting on a price for that.

I presume you would always change the DMF though, never just the clutch?!

I've had an alternative price for an LUK clutch kit and DMF @ £650. Awaiting labour charge from local independent to fit.

Anyone have any experience with LUK gear?

Any advice greatly received!

Thanks,

Ross

You don't need to change the flywheel automatically; if it's in serviceable order then put it back on.

Audi main dealers do tend to do it as a matter of course.

Hmmm.... thanks for the reply.

We're talking about a lot of money here, and I presume you can only check the condition of the flywheel once you have removed the clutch?

What would you do?

My local indy said they would assess the flywheel on my 2.0TDI and advise me on whether it was still within spec, so to speak.

They recommended changing both if you can afford it, as if the flywheel goes with the new clutch in, it's the same amount of labour again and more than likely a new clutch again.

Not actually needed it doing yet, was just having a chat with the mechanic when the above was said.

Yup, really no way to know until it's out. If it was juddering badly you'd be able to make a fairly safe bet on it needing one but if it's only just starting to slip under heavy load the flywheel will likely be OK.

So.... I've had prices from my local independent for replacing both clutch and DMF.

Using Audi parts @ £1350 inc. VAT fitted.
Using LUK parts @ £1200 inc. VAT fitted.

These prices include labour - 6 hours @ £66 an hour inc. VAT.

Sound reasonable?

And what would be the preference, Audi or LUK parts? Or do LUK make Audi clutches anyway?!

Worth checking a couple of dealers how much they charge
It might not be much more than quoted

Cheapest quote, but don't advise going down this route is mr clutch website to check cheapest option

Well...... over 3 years on and still on the original clutch - but it's started to slip again, and this time more often (each day for the last 3 days).

Car now almost on 118k miles.

According to Audi, they'll do a fixed price clutch for it for £1099 which is better than last time I looked.

Thoughts?

Check what warranty Audi provide on the work (something in the back of my head says 2yrs parts & labour)

The quotes you got previously seemed to have a large markup on the parts as only £400 of it was labour. Might be worth a shop round to see what other prices you get.

Carparts4less - clutch and flywheel, both LUK - c. £520.

Yes, just spoken to Audi and the £1099 clutch fixed price comes with 2 year parts guarantee.

I didn't check, but I presume it doesn't include the DMF.....

Just had a price from a Audi Indy (AudiTechnik in Matfield) and they want £1098.00 including VAT including the DMF.

Waiting for another VAG indy to call back....

Another VAG specialist has come in with £1000 inc. using LUK parts.

What does the Audi quote include vs the others?

If the Audi one includes the DMF, go for that. Extra year's warranty for £100.

The Audi quote does not include the DMF....... clutch only.

Probably be cheaper to go with an uprated organic clutch, Helix probably do one for it.

If it was me as well I would dump the DMF for SMF but thats me, I have always dumped them on all my diesels and a few petrols.
