When are you taking your winter tyres off?

I got keen last year and put them on for a winter that never happened... i even bought white salt and new shovels for snow that never came...

im sick of looking at the tatty winter wheels and tyres and want to get the much missed style 42 split rims onto the bmw touring as they were only refurbed last sept but question is when!!

anyone gone back to their normal tyres already?

I didn't bother to put them on this year - they've just been gathering dust in the shed. It hasn't been cold enough to be worth the effort.

I think mine will come off at the end of March when I've had my summer wheels re-furbed.

My OH has them on her car. They'll stay on until about Easter as two of the summer tyres are bald and she'll not get round to buying two new ones.

They're still my tyre of choice with all the rain (I also prefer the softer handling). My car is on a Merc "Agility" scheme and goes back in May for a replacement. the rears on the summer set are, while perfectly legal, getting to their last few months of tread. So I'm going to keep the winters on til probably mid-end April so saving me having to buy some new ones.

Probably mid-late March. Will coincide it with getting one of my summer alloys refurbed. Not needed my winters at all this year but the added cold weather grip is a comfort I suppose.

I got cheap tyres from ebay, partworn Pirelli Sottozeros put onto my existing alloys as the tyres on there were getting towards needing changed.

I'm watching on ebay to see if a set of 18s pop up at a reasonable price with tyres so I can just stick them on and store the winters, if not I'll just keep the winters on anyway

The best answer to this question that I've heard is "when it's warm enough to have a beer outside while you change the wheels".

Mrs Muppet's winters will come off at the end of Marchish, probably the first warm weekend of April. I didn't bother fitting my Elise ones.

When I was less lazy a couple of years ago I'd just pop out and swap the tyres over as needed - it's only half an hours work to change all four wheels.

And they fill in the potholes. My 16" steelies are far more resilient than the 18" alloys, and the amount of potholes around here is crazy.

Plus it's still 5-6 degrees and wet on my commute.

Usually Easter weekend. By that point they might have finished chucking salt on the roads up here.

It is an excellent rule as it automatically adapts to your local conditions

Probably early to mid May for me. Used mine countless times in utterly quantifiable conditions already, both at the end of last year and then this year and can foresee many more times where I'll be using their abilities. And that's just snow, letalone the countless icy and sub zero roads I've been on most weekends and some weekdays too. Right tyres for the conditions; Toyo R1R for summer, Michelin PA4 for winter.

Last year there was a massive dump of snow around 20 March, I wouldn't take them off yet!

I'm hanging on to mine for a while yet. Great in the wet and lovely squidgy ride.
