My Defender has a raised air intake i.e. Snorkel. Standard LR one with the mushroom top.

I pulled the vertical rubber tube near the windscreen off, and with engine running, I blocked the air intake with my hand. I felt some mild suction, but the engine kept going with no discernible difference. Clearly then the engine can breathe from somewhere apart from the air intake tube.

Any ideas on how to block this so that it only breathes from the tube? Otherwise I would be reluctant to do any deep wading.

Firstly, the Raised Air Intake (RAI)is exacly what it says on the tin... It is NOT a SNORKEL!!! It is designed for dusty environments and to draw air from higher up, where it should be cleaner. It is NOT for wading deep water.

That said, a well sealed RAI will help with deep water. biggrin

What you're going to have to do is systematically go through your induction system, checking the hoses for leaks and that the unions are tight. Also, depending on your engine, there's usually a drain bung in the bottom of the air-filter housing which will need plugging.

Cheers Camel Landy! Problem is under the bonnet it crowded with engine, air con tubing, etc, etc, difficult to see where the air induction goes! Even hard to get access to the air filter box (puma 2.4 tdc)

Might just decide not to do deep wading. The previous owner had it in water up to bonnet level so I guess he was just lucky.
