Turbo Charged And Super Charged Egines?

Some engines (VW TSi??) have a turbo and supercharger don't they? So how does that work then? Does the turbo feed the supercharger or the other way around or is there a valve that overrides the supercharger when the turbo gets up to pressure?

I haven't watched the supplied YouTube link cos I'm at work, but in a nutshell the supercharger fills in the low rpm boost while the turbo takes over once it's spinning at higher rpm.

Interestingly, this is a little like what Maclaren are doing with their P1 - electric motors replace the supercharger. It's called 'torque infill'

With the ever increasing number of hybrids on the market, I suspect that will basically become the replacement for twin-charging.

It's totally seamless, it's hard to tell what charger it's using at what time. You can hear it closing the diverter valves when the window is down.

I have the 180bhp 1.4 in Fabia VRS, fascinating to see the tech in the engine, but further reinforces my hesitation to keep it out of warranty!!

It's a cracking little engine, and the switch from super to turbo is seamless. Just a shame about the oil burning problems many owners are experiencing.

New ones don't suffer drom this anymore.


Not all tsi engines are twin charged only the 1.4tsi in the polo gti etc with 180bhp the 122 is just turbo as is the 1.2

I don't think the oil usage was actually anything to do with the induction method, was it? Most of the VAG FSI engines seem to suffer from it to an extent, I've no idea why the 1.4 TSi was particularly bad.
