Disabled Car Park Spaces

Does anyone else think supermarkets and the like have gone totally overboard by the amount of disabled car parking spaces they allocate in their car parks?
Went to a Tesco store last weekend and they had two whole rows (about 40 spaces) of disabled parking spaces, of which about only about 25% were being used. The rest of the car park was pure carnage, people were going the wrong way down the rows to find that elusive space so they could do their shopping.
Now, don't get me wrong. I think supermarkets should allocate disabled parking spaces but it seems the whole of the retail world has gone feckin mad.
Your thoughts?

10 spaces were being legitimately used? Is this Tesco opposite a hospital or something? My local Tesco (on the corner) has about 5 disabled spaces out of 20 in total. No one, absolutely no one, pays any attention to the markings. When it comes to a choice of moral sensibilities or doing the shopping guess which wins.

Dunno about that but 10 spaces were occupied. I may be sad enough to post a rant on here but I aint sad enough to actually watch them park and limp to the shops!!Ali Chappussy said:

There's legislation about the numbers.
It's something like 7, or 5%+1.
I'm sure someone has the real legislation, or you can Google it.
The 'problem' is that car parks are huge now.
In the OP's story, I'm guessing that there was a 'back' section if the carpark that was mostly empty.
Perhaps behind the petrol station or round the side of the store - but it still gets counted.

IMO I'd rather have a situation where 75% of the disabled spaces are unoccupied 90% of the time, rather than an alternative where disabled people are forced to wait for a space (normal spaces are difficult (understatement) where wheelchairs are involved).
Again, imo, you have to have enough disabled spaces to cope with the 'peak' number of disabled customers, rather than settling on a smaller number of spaces to cope with the 'average' number of disabled customers.
It's no real hardship to walk a bit further past the empty disabled bays to get to my car.

100% with you on this, OP. It's gone totally bonkers - IKEA being the ultimate demonstration of this: acres and acres of disabled parking, and very very little of it is ever used (I daresay that Ikea is the last place that anyone with mobility issues is going to want to make their way around. Wrong age demographic too, I suspect).There are obviously minimum space allocations for planning these days, but I suspect that many places and big companies need to be seen to be "doing the right thing" and will go over quota. Just a guess.
The solution that I came up with was to have "dynamic" spaces - whereby on weekends and at busy times more spaces are made available for disabled. Not sure how it'd be set up though.
if i walk over to our local sainsburys on a weekday lunch time i'd say a majority is taken, if you go in the evening, the majority are not taken
I guess the guys who need them go when the shop is overall at its most quiet
Ive never struggled to find a space in a supermarket down south apart from at xmas
I always park away from everyone else so perhaps its doesn't register with me as much

I don't get this. Its TOTALLY up to the landowner how they mark out the spaces on THEIR land. They do it for the convenience of their customers, it can be a struggle with a toddler in a child seat in narrow spaces.If you don't like it, shop somewhere else.

I think the point that you have completely missed is that all or most the other spaces were taken whilst a large number of disabled spaces remained empty.Our local Waitrose is similar, it's a small car park, probably 8 rows or so, but 2 rows are disabled spaces.

But, I wonder is planning regs are making them put in more disabled spaces?
