As you can see the old girl has, in typical TVR style, managed to dodge another bullet.
At least temporarily!

The hint is in the statement;

The odometer has done exactly what I would expect it to do. It stuck before it rolled over hehe
Likely it will work properly as soon as I start her up and start moving smile

That is amazing - the light is bright enough that you can actually see the dial rofl

If you do get one stuck on all the 9's I have found that pushing the trip reset in and out a few times quickly while on the move seems to bump it on.

I have no idea what ours has done, as it has a digital odometer and the battery is dead (although sometimes it says 11), but the last recorded mileage was 96000 in 2009 and I think the previous owner used it (and abused it) and I use it every day so even at 3000 a year it will be around 110,000 and still going strong. They do like to be driven. smile

So far top of the highest mileage Chimaera without an engine rebuild is semaj with a very respectable 117,689 miles.

On its original cam too!!!

Any advances on 117,689?

Remember, the rules are...No Engine Rebuilds Permitted.

I've seen plenty of RV8 Range Rovers do well over 200,000 miles on their original engine with no issue, but this is a game to see how robust the Griff & Chim Rover V8 engine can be.

And there's a strong argument that says the same engine in a TVR has a lot less work to do than in a big heavy 4x4, so I'd at least expect to see some 150k plus Chims & Griffs chime in soon ears

Come on high milers, lets have your best No Engine Rebuild numbers smile

But I'd expect the TVR to be driven a lot harder than the RR so I'd be surprised to see a 150/200k miler with no rebuilds. Be nice to hear of one though.

Revs dont wear engines out nono

But towing horse boxes and pulling 2 tonns of barn door along the road while turning all four wheels will.

That's way harder on an engine than frequent but unsustained periods where the upper rev range is explored.

A Rover V8 in a Chim or Griff is really doing no work at all for 98% of the time, it's bigger enemy is inactivity given the "Toy" status these cars enjoy.

Inactivity is no good for engine life at all, and finding a high mileage TVR will always be harder than finding a high mileage Range Rover because so few TVRs are daily drivers.

I still very much stand by my theory a that an RV8 in a frequently used TVR will have a far easier life than the same engine in a Range Rover, even if that TVR gets a good thrashing every now and again.

It's still only pulling along little more than a slippery shaped 1000kg which is no work at all.

Come on lets see some bigger numbers, but remember it must be on it's original engine buildwink

Mines on 126k, 4 litre chim, has had a new camshaft though that restored 50hp from 180bhp on the old cam to 220bhp and 250lb.ft torque,....

Any advance on 126?

Great result, a cam change is well within the rules so currently HiAsAKite is at the top of the highest miles without an engine rebuild tree clap

It seems these TVR's are quite durable after all.

As HiAsAKite says.....

Any advance on 126,000?...........ears

Not sure I get this! A new cam involves a lot of other replacement parts included in the job. I think we need to know more e.g. new followers, pushrods, rockers (maybe),water pump, hoses etc. This should class as a partial, essential rebuild because without this work it sounds like it would not have attained the mileage stated! Just saying!

A new cam DOES NOT involve new pushrods, rockers ,water pump, hoses etc... just a cam, followers, some gaskets & a timing chain set but only because you'd be mad not to replace the chain & sprockets while replacing the cam.

My guess is new cam or no new cam, HiAsAKite's engine would have soldiered on with its 180hp to this day, his cam was just worn not broken, he just fancied bringing it back to 220hp which is probably what it made when new.

Returning the 126,000 mile engine to "as new" performance for only the cost of a cam kit is a no-brainer and must have been enormously satisfying to witness.

A cam replacement is not even close to an engine rebuild, on these engines it's closer to maintenance, if his car needs another cam at 200,000 miles then I suspect HiAsAKite will be happy to oblige as in cost terms it'll probably mean little more outlay than paying for two cam belt changes on something modern & mundane.

But semaj, you do seem to have the highest mileage Chim on it's original cam so you've won that one, but have you properly inspected the condition of your 117,689 mile cam?

Is it possible your cam could also benefit from being replaced?

Cam replacement is just a great way to ensure optimum performance, in HiAsAKite's case it gave a very nice 40hp improvement, but that doesn't mean it couldn't have marched on to 150k or more on his old worn cam.

Just saying wink

Any advance on HiAsAKite's 126,000?...........ears
