Let's face it, they were always going to struggle making anything attractive with that massive great rubber lip on the front. hehe

Looks good to me. Probably not real, though.

It's a shopped copy of this picture of the Lynx.

The Lynx looks like someone welded a TR7 front to an SD1 tail.

Looks like an early mock up for the A-M Lagonda.

You jest hehe

Apparently "Where certain critical people in the past have said that the Leyland Princess resembled a car styled by two different people who were not on talking terms – one for the front and one for the back, the Lynx actually was! The styling might have been an unhappy mix of Harris Mann front and Canley studios rear"

There is that story of Giugiaro looking at the TR7 concept at its first show: he walked along one side, then the other and said, "Oh dear, it looks like that on this side too."

I recall, at the time it received a very lukewarm reception from everyone else too. Unfortunate end to a long line of great cars. All in my view of course.

By far and away the best selling TR though.

You're right, an ignominious end to a wonderful line of cars. Growing up in the late 50s/early 60s the TR was a car all young lads aspired to. Brutish good looks, six cylinders and a bit of racing pedigree too. Certainly more manly than an MG and more purposeful than a Healey. They had successfully and gradually improved with the times as they evolved from the TR2 through to Micholtti's TR6. Then bang down to Earth with a dumpy 4 cylinder wedge oops frown Unforgivable in my books. And yes I know all about the V8 and the convertible still a shadow of the proper TRs.

Is that a Toyota?

SD1, ish.

You are not kidding me!

To be honest the TR7 could have been good. Just as the Princess could have been good. In the days of the Fiat X1/9, DS1, TVR wedges, Esprit and kits like that it could have been a nice looker. But the bumpers and the ride height so spoilt it.

If it only had something like the Alfa V6 or a Beemer 2.8 in.

IMO the OP photo looks much better than the Lynx.

Despite many peoples complaints about the styling when the came out and now, I've always liked them, would still buy one if I had time, money and space for another car.

I did nearly buy one in 1984 but the only ones I could afford were getting rusty, so I ran away!

My one time boss was annoyed when 7s were allowed to join the TR register because when he bought his 6 brand new, he wasn't allowed to join as it was 'too modern' smile

He's confirmed to me that no such vehicle existed, and that this must therefore be a photoshop.

Some things never change - I give you the new Jaguar F-Type:

Front end by someone looking at Aston-Martins and Nissan GTRs:

Back end by someone else, probably American and possibly looking at a BMW Z8:

But while the two ends look fine by themselves they just don't work together for me.

I must admit I always quite liked the look of the Lynx.

Or started off with the Sprint engine and the V8, although I'm not quite sure what you need to do to a 3.5L V8 to reduce its output to the level quoted for the Lynx.

I don't think they'd ever have been able to get the Beemer 2.8 lump into it, I don't like to think how many years its been since I saw one, but it was a long old thing, they'd have needed to double the length of the bonnet. If they were going to put a straight six (which is of course the right and proper engine for an English sports car) then they could have gone for a XK or an AJ16.

I think BL were ahead of the game - again.

Whilst many would eschew the 4 pot engine and 'modern styling', the market was getting ready for mass market good looking cars that were more lifestyle than actual ability (fast forward thirty years and what's changed?).

The people who wanted something hairier could get a Trevor after all.

All IMHO and probably bolleaux.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that, but given the point in time, it makes sense I suppose. As someone.said above, they were aiming for a bigger market.

US market: lots of E-types, TR6s and TR7s went there.
