What car would you buy for an expanding family?

Gentle PH folk,
My wife and I are planning a family expansion, and thus we need a car which will accomodate. I'm looking at replacing her ageing little runabout with something more practical, with more room and something a bit more comfortable on longer journeys. She also has a sod of a commute at the moment so I'm thinking auto oil burner of some description.
Just looking for thoughts and opinions on large cars, estates or SUVs which you've owned or experienced which might fit the bill. Budget circa £25k. As an example i've been looking at slightly older higher mileage Q5s or the new Qashqai, but I'm open to any suggestions as I journey into sensibledom.
If I promise not to park in PC spaces when kids do arrive, your thoughts and recommendations are much appreciated.
