What....tyres?

Morning all.
Have just bought a modest but clean Celica 140. The only thing I wish to change sooner rather than later is the front tyres. Prior to sale they needed replacing and the vendor put some Ditchfinders on the front - fair as it was short term for him, and ultimately a 3 grand car.
However these come with all of the noisy tram-liney goodness as well as that frisson of excitement you get when you go into a wet roundabout and you wonder whether its going to under steer wildly or play ball.
In short, I would like to upgrade to some 'proper' tyres.
It has a pair of Khumos on the back? I have these as sort of mid range in my head - is this fair? Would a pair of similar on the front be all I really need? Or do we think I am better off getting premiums on the front and matching them on the back when the time comes?
I used to have an MR2, which had Bridgestone RE040s on, which were fine - but pretty much the default choice for the car due to the slightly awkward rear wheel size.
Are there any particular tyres which anyone would heartily recommend?

Brand is not enough to give much idea about the quality of a tyre - the same brand can have very different quality in different models. If you decide to replace all of them, I've been very impressed by the Eagle F1s I've just put on the OH's Octavia. They're not especially cheap, mind.

I have the same size on my Clio and I've gone for the Dunlop Sport Maxx all round. Really like them! Conti SC5s are good as well at this price range but the Dunlops came with a huge amount of tesco club points (when bought with BlackCircles) that will pay for a Eurotunnel ticket later this year!My tyre of choice at the minute is the Dunlop, in that size I think it's the maxx, at about £120 a corner

I'd go for the Nokian zLine if you can find them. I've a lot of love for Nokian though, they're mega underrated.
