My other car is a...banger...
Discussion
Non-TVRer here, but I hope to buy a wedge very soon. However, it will stretch the finances a bit so my everyday car is going to have to be a banger.... (or I might just stay with my current 13 year old 145K Volvo C70...)
Are there many TVR owners who have had to cut their cloth a bit short to be able to own a TVR? Give up (or reduce) holidays, nights out, a "nice" everyday car? Or am I nuts to even consider this....?

My "other" car is a fleabay special that I paid 3 figures for..Jag S type with 160k on clock. she's still a good motorway cruiser and has only cost me a wheel bearing and track rod ends so far Are there many TVR owners who have had to cut their cloth a bit short to be able to own a TVR? I begged, stole and borrowed to buy my first Chimaera new in 1995. Desperate to preserve it's value, I tooled around in a pretty appalling string of crates as runabouts.
They were the first cars I had ever had that I didn't really care about and I found it quite liberating. I could leave them anywhere and not care whether they were even there when i got back. Got me into barging which has meant some very cheap motoring since.

Odd you should say that; I am on my second C70 cabriolet (as a second/first car)
Times change as time goes by I suppose.
I had a Volvo 440 GLX (140k on the clock) when I bought the Chimaera.
Of course I was paying near new price for the Chimaera (circa £34k), so a little different for me.
I stuck with the GLX until the TVR was fully paid up, and then bought my first C70 near-new.
I actually only upgraded the Volvo 1) because having paid off the TVR I could afford a new 'toy'; 2) arriving at business meetings in a new TVR while trying to sell products and services probably wasn't giving the 'right impression'; 3) ditto arriving in an ancient GLX probably wasn't giving the 'right impression'.
The old GLX continued to do some service for long hauls where 'image' wasn't critical and especially when weather was crap, but in the end I paid to have it scrapped.
Are you mad; that is a totally separate topic for discussion

14 year old 170K mile E320 CDI estate here, still can get over 50mpg on a run if gentle with it:-)
Also 8 year old supercharged Range Rover Sport with 75K on it that I have had from new that will be run into the ground rather than updated. That does not get 50mpg but at least it makes the TVR look cheap to run:-)

£700 got me a VW bora. Looks pretty good now that I've polished it up using my DA.
I don't really think I'm compromising that much, it drives much better than some newer cars. Returns 36 mpg, Cruise control, automatic climate, auto wipers, Ipod connector and reversing camera. It's alright really. Everyone comments on how good it looks
Only spent £40 on a water-pump and £30 on a wheel bearing in the last 20k miles.
Pick the right banger and it won't be a massive compromise.

Love the Bora. I didn't own a car for a while but I bought a VW Vento (£700) so I could go hunting for Cerberas. It had one wheel in the scrapyard when I bought it. Then I gave it to my Brother who gave it to my Dad and after 3 years and very little spent, it finally did go to the scrappy for £120.
Sheds are fantastic!

It makes perfect sense to me.Are there many TVR owners who have had to cut their cloth a bit short to be able to own a TVR? Give up (or reduce) holidays, nights out, a "nice" everyday car? Or am I nuts to even consider this....?
I wouldn't want a Cerb as a daily runner. I had an Integrale 15 years ago that stopped feeling special and it handled the adverse conditions much better than the Cerb - but familiarity soon bred contempt.
So these days I buy a £500 snotter with a full year's MOT to handle the mundane trips and the bad weather. I don't spend anymore because I don't want to "fall" for the car and end up pumping money into it, if you know what I mean. That's what the Cerb's for.
In the time I've had the Cerb I've had a Clio, a Saxo VTR, Citroen ZX turbo diesel and three Pumas. All good fun.
We're all different but because I've got the shed, every time I take the Cerb out it's like the first drive in it.
