Different Types Of Diesel

I know we've had the Supermarket v The Rest thread a number of times but out of interest;

Forsook the local Tesco today and filled up at a little Murco garage. The diesel looks to be of a darker colour, appears to be more viscous, foams much more easily and stinks when it ended up on my hands - just like old fashioned diesel used to !
Is this Murco stuff really old fashioned or just different ?
