Hi, I'm just about to get the clutch replaced on my 996tt. I'm getting an uprated clutch (890NM) as the car has been remapped and I've been asked if I want to upgrade the flywheel at the same time to a lightweight version - obviously if I wanted to do it, getting it done at the same time as the clutch is eminently sensible!

I was just wondering if anyone else had done this and what your thoughts are. To add a bit more info, the car is primarily for road use - I might do the odd track day at some stage in the future but this would only be an occasional occurrence.

Any views/opinions gratefully received!

I have that set up (Sachs) in my 993, it can be a little chuggy at times but worth it in my opinion. I presume you're doing other mods if upgrading the clutch from standard so it would definitely be worth putting the GT2 fly in it also smile

The car has already been remapped - 520bhp apparently (haven't seen a dyno printout to confirm though) but the clutch is slipping…in fairness the clutch is probably getting on for 35-40k miles old so wasn't in the first flush of youth anyway…!

A LWFW is not to everyones taste, although I do not regret changing mine, to give my view, it certainly makes the car pick up and respond quicker, however it is noisier at idle and has the propensity to stall occasionally when in stop start traffic although just a slight adaptation of technique will eliminate that.

^^ totally agree!

What mods are done to get 520bhp? Should be a lot to get an extra 100 safely. (Although a lot less than my old air cooled!)

Probably in the minority on this subject but I'd stay with the stock flywheel, unless the clutch kit maker recommends something else.

The stock flywheel has the dual mass feature which also acts as a dampener. The Turbo engine is already a bit of a rough/variable idler and I hate to think what it would sound like with no crankshaft dampening at all.

Besides, look at the stock flywheel. It is not that large or heavy considering it handles 420hp and nearly that much torque. My stock 996 Turbo gains RPMs so quickly in 1st or 2nd that it can hit the rev limiter before I know it. The engine responds instantly to the throttle when shifting down and rev matching. Can't believe a LWFW would bring that much more to the engine and engine experience.

As well as the remap, it also has an upgraded exhaust system with 200 cell cats (all done by the previous owner) - however, I think the bhp figure is just a guess; can't see how it could have been measured given the degree of clutch slippage. Once I get the Sachs 890NM on it, I'll get it on a rolling road and report back!

Thanks for the thoughts and views. I think I'll make up my mind once the clutch is being done and the garage have let me know the condition of the current flywheel, but think I'm edging closer to keeping the existing one. Having driven the car a few times over the last couple of days, it has reminded me that getting it in and out of the garage is already awkward enough (some tight low-speed manoeuvring on an incline) so a lightweight flywheel probably won't make life any easier in that respect! I'm sure it's something I could live with if already on the car but when it's going to cost me an extra £600…hmmm, just not sure…! hehe
