No, I don't think the oil would even make it into the main casing- it'd make a big mess, you'd have no way of checking the level and I'm pretty sure the shaft is sealed anyway so the oil would just sit in the extension housing threatening to leak out of the rear dust cap and onto the propshaft/chassis crossmember/floor.

It's possible to take the top plate off the gearbox and fill through that instead if you prefer. It's possible to access itWith nimble fingers through the engine bay but is easier if you can get to the far end (nearest the diff) via access inside the car as well.
As said though, via the lever is going to be a disaster.
On the advice of those who had gone before me, I purchased a stepped, weld-in O2 bung and plug, and took it and the gearbox cover plate to my local welder (an exhaust/muffler place). The result:
Install engine/gearbox, fill through new O2 bung until it dribbles out the hole in the side, measure the level through O2 bung with a home-made dipstick from a piece of scrap metal and mark it, and then never have to deal with the side plug again.
