Trafic DCi80 - Turbo issue? Seeking advice
Discussion
I'm looking for some advice on a Trafic that I have purchased with a fault but the price was worth the gamble even if I scrapped it or chucked some money at it for a new engine etc.
Basically its a Renault Trafic DCi80 '51 plate diesel 1.9 van.
The van starts fine and idles quite sweetly.
Try revving it and it appears to struggle building up the revs.
When driving under load it does much the same with struggling up the revs and pumps out black smoke which smells more of unburnt fuel rather than oil. It really struggles to climb the slightest of hills and you have to go down the gears.
At about 2800rpm there is what appears to be a diesel knock/rattle which will then disappear after you pass another 500rpm or so, during this time the black smoke appears and beyond with load on the engine ...disappears if you ease of the throttle.
I'm thinking that the turbo is the issue as I cannot seem to hear it spool up and the black smoke appears about the time I would expect it to be boosting .... reasoning is that the engine gets it fuel for that rev/load but not the expected boost.
A point to add is that there are no warning lights appearing on the dash.
Can anyone confirm my diagnostic is fairly correct or any suggestions please?
Many Thanks

No harm, but if you dont have some tools for checking basic stuff, you're really going to be fighting a losing battle...whilst tied up and blindfolded.
It could be anything from a boost pipe open to a knackered turbo or injection system.
Given the potential expensive involved, random guesswork isnt going to get you anywhere as it could be a free fix, or thousands.
But you will need some ability to diagnose the ecu and what feedback it is receiving from various sensors. Unless of course you spot an obvious external mechanical issue like a pipe

Bit of an update:
Spent a day on it yesterday using what I have learnt in the past from Vivaro van issues.
ELM327 diag tool not compatible and can't read ecu. Still no fault light on dash unless I unplug turbo sensor or solenoid.
No chaffed wiring in loom except for one of the injectors which was rubbing plastic. Sorted.
EGR valve nice and clean, new a few months ago apparently.
ECU wiring not chaffing on metal case.
Turbo sensors all plugged in, get a warning light on dash if I unplug them.
All pipes have no splits or breaks.
Turbo free wheels by hand and spins when engine idling.
Fuel filter fine, however it would not prime to refill the filter canister. Had to manually put 12v to in tank lift pump to prime and it started straight away ... Thinking maybe the high pressure pump isn't getting enough fuel I tried to run engine with in tank pump constantly running and it hasn't cleared the fault. Not sure if these run on initial key turn for a few seconds and then switch off.
When MAF is connected it is terrible, not enough power to drive off.
MAF disconnected its a bit driveable and can make 40mph with a struggle but struggles when it hit any hills.
With this in mind I've ordered a new MAF to see what that does.

Can't comment o all problems but you will need to clear any codes associated with the MAF before normal service will be resumed if it's the cause of the fault.
As your lift pump isn't working I'd be checking for any air leaks in the fuel lines. Also check the fuel filter seals are in good condition and fitted correctly, the rubber seal goes under the filter, not on top.
